How to Use It

Step 1: Print pages 5-31. If desired, print page 5 on card stock to make a sturdier cover and back page. This is not required, but it will help the mini-books last longer.

Step 2: Cut out the pieces for a letter (kindergarteners will probably need your help). Make the "letter book" first by folding the uppercase and lowercase letters backward. Glue the triangle that says "back" onto the matching triangle on the main page. Then accordion-fold the picture strip, making the first fold up so the strip can be glued into the book.

Step 3: Add one or two letters each week. Staple the pages into one half-sheet sized book or glue the main portion of each letter page into a journal. Children can assemble the mini-books themselves as a lesson in alphabetical order, or you can pre-assemble them.

When children are first learning to do these pages, demonstrate a few times. An accordion-fold is often new to kindergarteners, so they will likely need your help until they are more familiar with the technique.

A note about the dot-to-dot letters: You may notice that the dot-to-dot letters are not created in traditional writing format. It is not physically possible to do that due to the nature of a dot-to-dot. Dot-to-dots are intended to be continuous, but most letters are not created in one continuous motion. These are meant as a fun activity to discover the letter. Since these books are intended for review, that should not cause any handwriting problems.
