How to Use It

Step 1: Print the color activities and then cut apart any pieces that need it. We suggest that you laminate the activities so the printables can be used many times over the course of multiple years (without little hands accidentally damaging them).

Step 2: Introduce one activity at a time. To make the clip cards self-checking, put a colored dot on the back by each correct answer. Choose the sorting mats with or without color prompting for each child.

Step 3: Set the activities out in your math centers or small groups. Select the colors you want for the spring bird mini book and have children color the birds to match the words on each page and trace the color words.

Easy Differentiation

Young children are at many different places with colors. These spring activities make it easy to meet each child right where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with the sorting mats that show color prompts
  • Use fewer cards in the umbrella and rain boot matching game
  • Work with two or three colors at a time
  • Name each color aloud together before children sort or clip

For On-Level Practice

  • Use the flower and kite clip cards in centers
  • Sort pictures into primary and secondary color groups
  • Play the spin and cover games with a partner

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the second sorting mats without color prompting
  • Play the matching game with all of the cards
  • Trace and read every color word in the bird mini book
  • Have children name other spring things that are the same color

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice color words and spring vocabulary such as flower, kite, umbrella and rain boot
  • Use clip cards and play dough mats to build pinching and hand strength
  • Let children point to their answer if speaking is hard
  • Reduce the number of choices and give extra processing time

Perfect For

  • Preschool and pre-K math centers
  • Spring theme units
  • Small group instruction
  • One-on-one practice
  • Speech therapy and ELL groups
  • Occupational therapy sessions
  • Special education classrooms
