Electricity and magnets card game fun that your students will love! Vocabulary review has never been so fun. In this Electricity and Magnets Vocabulary Slap-It! Card Game, students match vocabulary, definition and picture cards to better understand the terms used in the study of electricity and magnets.
Each word matches one or more definition cards, so students see several sides of what a term means: a standard definition, the word used in a defining sentence and a picture. Words such as electromagnet, magnet, generator, magnetic field and electric current come to life with pictures of magnets, lit and unlit bulbs, circuits and magnetic attraction. Your students will be asking you for more chances to review after playing this!
With this electricity and magnets card game, you get
- A fast-paced Slap It! game for science vocabulary review
- Vocabulary word, definition and picture cards
- Science pictures of magnets, bulbs, circuits and magnetic attraction
- CENTER and PLAYING cards so you choose which cards students match
- A game for 2-4 players that fits right into small group time
Print, cut and let the slapping begin!
What's Included
- Electricity and magnets vocabulary word cards, including electromagnet, magnet, generator, magnetic field and electric current
- Definition cards that give a standard definition or use the word in a defining sentence
- Picture cards showing magnets, lit and unlit bulbs, circuits and magnetic attraction
- Directions for playing the Slap It! card game
Why Teachers Love It
-
Vocabulary review kids ask for: The race to slap the match keeps every player watching the pile.
-
Several ways to know a word: Definitions, sentences and pictures help students understand each term more deeply.
-
Easy to adjust: You can choose any set of cards for the CENTER pile.
-
Great for small groups: The game is built for 2-4 players and fits easily into small group time.
-
No tech needed: A simple deck of cards works for review stations and test prep.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Science vocabulary: Students connect electricity and magnetism terms to their meanings.
-
Understanding definitions: Students read definitions and defining sentences to decide which word they describe.
-
Connecting words and pictures: Picture cards help students link each term to what it looks like, such as a circuit or a lit bulb.
-
Reading comprehension: Students use the sentence clues to find the matching card.
-
Quick recall: Fast rounds build the speed and confidence students need for science review.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Waiting during group play
- Listening to classmates
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Place the CENTER cards face down in a pile. (You can choose any set of cards for the CENTER.) Deal the PLAYING cards equally among players and place them face down in a pile in front of each player.
Step 2: Decide the first player and flip over one of the CENTER cards. In clockwise order, players flip one card at a time. When a PLAYING card is flipped that matches the CENTER card: SLAP-IT!
Step 3: The first player to slap the card takes the center pile of cards that have been played and adds them to the bottom of their own pile. Flip another CENTER card and keep playing. The game is finished when time is up or one player has all the PLAYING cards.
It plays just like Slap Jack, but a control pile in the center tells you which cards to slap.
Easy Differentiation
Students come to a science unit with different reading levels and background knowledge. These simple changes help everyone play.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with just the word and picture cards
- Play with a few vocabulary words at a time
- Read the definition cards aloud together before playing
- Play slowly as a matching game before adding the race
For On-Level Practice
- Add the definition cards to the word and picture cards
- Use the vocabulary word cards as the CENTER pile
- Have students say the word as they slap the match
- Play in small groups of 2-4
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the definition cards as the CENTER pile
- Play with every card type at once
- Ask the player who slaps to explain how the cards match
- Have students use the word in a new sentence about electricity or magnets
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the picture cards to build science vocabulary
- Pre-teach a few key words before the game
- Have students point to or touch the match if slapping is hard
- Use a short language frame such as "This is a ___."
- Give extra processing time before each card is flipped
Perfect For
- Small group time
- Science centers
- Electricity and magnets units
- Vocabulary review before a test
- Partner games
- Early finishers
- ELL vocabulary support
- Homeschool science
