  • One vowel at a time: Every card and board focuses on the medial /i/ sound for targeted practice.
  • Low prep: Print, laminate, cut and you are ready to play.
  • Flexible play: Choose cooperative, competitive, independent or parallel play to fit each child.
  • Great for therapy and intervention: The picture-to-word matching works well for RTI, speech, OT and ELL groups.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • CVC word recognition: Children identify familiar short i words and connect written words to pictures through visual matching.
  • Phonemic awareness and decoding: Learners isolate and blend the beginning, middle and ending sounds in simple CVC words.
  • Visual discrimination and scanning: Kids search busy boards to find matching CVC pictures, building attention to detail.
  • Early reading and vocabulary: Children build reading confidence as they connect sounds to letters and name words like kid, lid and six.
  • Focus and quick thinking: Because it is a race to find the picture, kids stay alert and engaged with each turn.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Communicating choices
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the CVC word picture cards, I Spy game boards and token cards. Laminate for long-term use and cut the pieces apart.

Step 2: Choose one CVC I Spy game board and place it in the center. Deal picture cards to each player.

Step 3: All players flip one CVC word card at a time and race to find the matching picture on the board. The first player to spot the correct picture wins a token! Keep flipping and matching until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Give one student an I Spy game board and the full stack of CVC word cards. They flip each card, find the picture and cover it with a mini eraser or token. This builds visual focus and CVC word recognition independently.

Parallel Play

Two players use separate I Spy game boards and take turns flipping and matching their own CVC word cards at their own pace. This is great for learners who need personal space or are just beginning to join group activities.

Materials You'll Need

  • Laminating supplies (for long-term use)
  • Mini erasers or tokens (for independent play)

Easy Differentiation

Every beginning reader brings different phonics skills and attention spans, and these play options make the game easy to adapt.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Read each word card together and stretch out the sounds before searching
  • Use independent play so children can search at their own pace
  • Play cooperatively without the race

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with a small group
  • Have players read each word aloud when they flip the card
  • Rotate through different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Have players read the word before searching for the picture
  • Ask players to tap out each sound of the word they find
  • Have players use the word in a sentence after finding it

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use the pictures as natural prompts for expressive language and labeling
  • Practice the medial /i/ sound and target words as children name each picture
  • Use parallel play for learners who need personal space
  • Have children cover each picture with a mini eraser to build fine motor control
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy center warm-ups
  • RTI and small groups
  • Early finishers
  • Rainy day fun and indoor recess
  • Speech therapy and occupational therapy sessions
