Telling time matching cards in multiple levels, so your students can review time to the hour, the half hour, fifteen minutes and five minutes! Telling time can be a difficult task for young learners, but review becomes very enjoyable with these matching games.
Children look at the analog clock (a clock face with hands) on each card and find the digital time (the time shown with numbers only) that matches it. Each level is printed on its own pages, so you can pull out exactly the times your class is working on and add the next level when children are ready.
With these telling time matching cards, you get
- Matching games for time to the hour, the half hour, :15, :45 and five minutes
- Analog clock cards paired with digital time cards
- Separate pages for each level, so printing one skill is easy
- A hands-on format for centers, small groups and partner play
Print the level your students need and start matching!
What's Included
- Time on the hour: pages 4-5
- Time on the half hour, Level One: pages 6-7
- Time on the :15: pages 8-9
- Time on the :45: pages 10-11
- Time to 5 minutes (times that are not included in the other sections): pages 12-15
- Analog clock cards and matching digital time cards for each level
Please note: Not all times are included in the time to 5 minutes section, but there are 3 pairs for each five-minute period.
Why Teachers Love It
-
Grows with your students: Move from the hour to the half hour, the quarter hour and five-minute times as children are ready.
-
Easy to print one skill: Each level has its own pages, so you print only what you need.
-
Review that feels like a game: Finding matching pairs keeps children looking closely at every clock.
-
Analog and digital together: Children connect the clock face to the way time is written.
-
Flexible for any group: Use the cards for a matching game, partner practice or independent matching.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Reading analog clocks: Children look at the hour hand and the minute hand to tell the time shown.
-
Matching analog and digital time: Each pair connects a clock face to its digital time.
-
Time to the hour and half hour: The first levels focus on :00 and :30 times.
-
Time to the quarter hour: The :15 and :45 levels add quarter past and quarter to times.
-
Time to five minutes: The final level covers more five-minute times on the clock.
-
Remembering card positions: Keeping track of where cards were placed helps children find pairs faster.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Remembering previous guesses
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Using mathematical language
- Working independently
How to Use It
Step 1: Choose the level your students need and print those pages. Laminate the cards for durability and cut them apart.
Step 2: Model a few turns. Turn over two cards, read the analog clock and the digital time aloud and decide if they match.
Step 3: Set the cards out in a math center, small group or partner game. When children are ready, add the next level or mix two levels together.
Easy Differentiation
Children learn to tell time at very different rates. These leveled matching cards make it easy to give each child the right amount of challenge.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with time on the hour
- Play with only a few pairs at a time
- Lay the cards face up and match them before playing the matching game
- Use a real or toy clock to show the same time
For On-Level Practice
- Play with the hour and half hour levels
- Mix two levels in one game for review
- Have partners check each match together
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the :15, :45 and five-minute levels
- Play with more pairs at once
- Ask children to say each time two ways, such as 3:45 and quarter to 4
- Have children write the time for each pair they find
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice time words such as o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to
- Have children say each time aloud before checking for a match
- Let children point to the matching card when speaking is hard
- Reduce the number of cards and give extra processing time
Perfect For
- 1st and 2nd grade math centers
- Small groups
- Partner games
- Intervention
- Early finishers
- Review before a time test
- Special education classrooms
- Homeschool
Standards
These telling time matching cards support 1st and 2nd grade standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):
Common Core State Standards
-
CCSS 1.MD.B.3: Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
-
CCSS 2.MD.C.7: Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, as in the :15, :45 and five-minute levels.
Texas TEKS
-
TEKS Math 1.7.E: Tell time to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks.
-
TEKS Math 2.9.G: Read and write time to the nearest one-minute increment using analog and digital clocks.
Virginia SOL
-
VA SOL Math 1.MG.3: Tell time to the hour and half-hour and match the time on an analog clock to a digital time.
-
VA SOL Math 2.MG.2: Show an understanding of time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks.
Add the Time Matching Cards to your cart and give your students a fun, leveled way to review telling time. Print the level each child needs, lay out the cards and watch confidence with the clock grow one match at a time!
