Beginning sounds alphabet puzzles give preschool and kindergarten students hands-on practice with letters A-Z, one strip at a time! Each puzzle in these Beginning Sounds Line Up Puzzles is cut into 5 strips, and children line up the pieces from left to right to rebuild the letter, picture and sentence.

As each puzzle comes together, children match uppercase and lowercase letters and connect the letter to a beginning sound picture, such as K is for king or V is for volcano. The finished puzzle is its own built-in check, so children can see right away when every strip is in the right place.

With these beginning sounds alphabet puzzles, you get

  • A puzzle for every letter A-Z in color and black and white
  • Uppercase and lowercase letters, a beginning sound picture and a simple sentence on each puzzle
  • Left-to-right practice that builds early reading directionality
  • Fine motor work as children cut, handle and arrange the strips

Print, cut and add them to your literacy centers today!

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the color or black and white version. Cut each puzzle apart along the gray lines to create 5 vertical strips. Laminate the color puzzles for repeated use, or use the black and white version for students to color and keep.

Step 2: Give students one beginning sounds puzzle at a time. Students look at the letters, picture and sentence pieces, then line up the strips from left to right to rebuild the complete puzzle.

Step 3: After the puzzle is complete, students name the uppercase and lowercase letter, say the letter sound, identify the picture and read or repeat the sentence.

Easy Differentiation

Every child comes to the alphabet with different strengths. These puzzles are simple to adjust so each child can be successful.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Place the first strip down before children begin
  • Start with letters children already know, such as the letters in their names
  • Say the picture name together and stretch out the beginning sound
  • Use the color puzzles for stronger picture clues

For On-Level Practice

  • Build one puzzle at a time and name the letter and sound
  • Repeat the sentence after the puzzle is complete
  • Work through a few new letters each week

For an Extra Challenge

  • Mix two alphabet puzzles together and have children sort the pieces before rebuilding both puzzles
  • Ask children to name another word that begins with the same sound
  • Have children read the sentence on their own
  • Build a group of puzzles in alphabetical order

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice the target sound with the picture word in a short sentence frame such as "K is for ___."
  • Laminate the strips so they are easier to pick up and slide into place
  • Offer pre-cut strips for children who are not ready to cut
  • Model one puzzle from start to finish and give extra processing time

Perfect For

  • Preschool and pre-K literacy centers
  • Kindergarten phonics centers
  • Small group instruction
  • Morning tubs
  • Fine motor task boxes
  • Early finishers
  • Intervention groups
  • Speech and occupational therapy sessions
