Beginning Sounds BINGO gives preschool and kindergarten students an engaging way to practice letter to picture matching, vocabulary and listening skills during literacy centers, small groups, speech therapy or homeschool lessons. BINGO is one of those classroom games kids already understand pretty quickly, which means you spend less time explaining directions and more time practicing the skill. Yes, please.
This alphabet BINGO game helps children listen carefully to words, identify initial sounds and connect beginning sounds to lowercase letters through repeated, playful practice. It includes two levels, so you can choose the version that fits your students' current phonemic awareness and letter recognition needs. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and work with the individual sounds in spoken words.
With this beginning sounds BINGO game, you get
- 2 levels of play for differentiated beginning sounds practice
- Picture BINGO mats and lowercase letter BINGO mats
- Beginning sound picture cards and lowercase letter calling cards
- Every piece in color and in black and white
- Repeated listening practice that never feels like a test
We all know preschoolers will happily play BINGO again and again, but ask them to "review beginning sounds" and suddenly everyone needs a bathroom break.

How to Use It
Step 1: Choose the BINGO mats. Use the picture BINGO mats for students who are still building confidence with vocabulary and initial sounds. Use the lowercase letter BINGO mats when students are ready to connect beginning sounds to letters.
Step 2: Choose the calling cards. Use the picture cards to have students listen for beginning sounds. Use the lowercase letter cards when you want students to find a matching picture that begins with that sound.
Step 3: Call a card, have students listen carefully and then cover the matching letter or picture on their BINGO mat. You can also use the cards outside of BINGO for quick vocabulary warm-ups, letter sound review, picture naming or one-on-one beginning sounds practice.
Materials You'll Need
- BINGO chips, mini erasers, counting cubes, buttons, dot markers or crayons for marking the mats
Easy Differentiation
Children hear and connect sounds at very different stages. The two levels and mix-and-match cards make it easy to meet each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Play with the picture BINGO mats and picture calling cards
- Name each picture on the mat together before you start
- Stretch out the first sound as you call each card
- Play with a small group so you can offer help right away
For On-Level Practice
- Call picture cards while students cover the matching lowercase letter
- Have students say the beginning sound before they cover a space
- Play to a full row and then keep going to a full mat
- Use the black and white pages for take-home practice
For an Extra Challenge
- Call lowercase letter cards while students find a picture that begins with that sound
- Ask students to name another word that starts with the same sound
- Let a child be the caller
- Have students color the black and white pictures and label the beginning letter
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Choose picture cards that match each child's target sounds for speech therapy articulation and vocabulary support
- Use a short language frame such as "I hear /m/ at the beginning."
- Use dot markers or large chips for children building hand control
- Use the black and white mats to reduce visual clutter
- Give extra processing time before each call
