Beginning sounds picture matching games give your preschool, pre-K and kindergarten learners a hands-on way to hear, say and match initial sounds! Children flip two cards, say each picture name aloud and decide whether the pictures start with the same sound or match the right uppercase or lowercase letter.

Every round builds phonemic awareness, the ability to hear and work with the small sounds in spoken words. Because you choose the matching focus, the same set of cards grows with your students from picture-to-picture sound matches all the way to matching uppercase and lowercase letters.

With these beginning sounds matching games, you get

  • Four ways to play with one set of cards
  • Picture cards plus uppercase A-Z and lowercase a-z letter cards
  • Full color and black-and-white versions
  • Repeated practice saying and hearing initial sounds
  • An easy way to simplify or add a challenge just by changing the cards

Print once and use these matching games all year long!

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Identifying beginning sounds: Children say each picture name and listen for the first sound.
  • Isolating initial sounds: Children separate the first sound from the rest of the spoken word.
  • Matching by shared beginning sound: Picture-to-picture matches ask children to find two pictures that start the same way.
  • Letter-sound correspondence: Picture-to-letter matches connect each sound with its uppercase or lowercase letter.
  • Letter recognition: Uppercase-to-lowercase matches build quick recognition of both forms of every letter.
  • Visual discrimination: Children compare letters and pictures closely to decide if they match.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Remembering previous guesses
  • Maintaining attention
  • Listening to classmates
  • Waiting during group play
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose your matching focus: picture to picture, picture to uppercase letter, picture to lowercase letter or uppercase to lowercase letter. Print the cards in color or black and white.

Step 2: Shuffle the cards and lay them face down in rows. Start with fewer pairs for early learners.

Step 3: Players take turns flipping two cards and saying the words aloud. If the cards share the same beginning sound or letter, the player keeps the pair. Keep playing until all pairs are found. Play as a friendly competition or work together as a team.

Easy Differentiation

Children come to beginning sounds with very different levels of experience. These matching games are easy to adjust for every learner.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with only a few pairs at a time
  • Start with picture-to-picture matching before adding letters
  • Name each picture together before the game begins
  • Play face up first so children can focus on the sounds

For On-Level Practice

  • Play picture-to-uppercase or picture-to-lowercase matching in centers
  • Play with a partner in a literacy center
  • Say the sound and the letter name for every match
  • Mix in a few new letters each week

For an Extra Challenge

  • Increase the number of pairs on the table
  • Mix uppercase and lowercase letter cards in one game
  • After each match, name another word with the same beginning sound
  • Focus on letters that are often confused

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Choose picture cards that target specific initial sounds for articulation practice
  • Use the picture names for vocabulary building
  • Use a sentence frame such as "___ starts with ___."
  • Let children point to or hand over a card when speaking is hard
  • Give extra processing time and model the first few turns

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers
  • Small group instruction
  • Partner games
  • Speech therapy sessions
  • Intervention groups
  • Assessments
  • Task boxes
  • Homeschool phonics
