Beginning sounds picture sort mats give your preschool, pre-K and kindergarten students hands-on practice with initial sounds, listening skills, letter recognition and vocabulary. Children look at the target letter, name each picture card, listen for the beginning sound and place each card on the correct mat.
Beginning sounds are an important early literacy skill, but children need more than a quick "What sound does this start with?" during circle time. These phonemic awareness mats include two levels of support, so you can introduce beginning sounds with picture-to-picture matching and then move children toward more independent initial sound sorting.
With these beginning sounds sorting mats, you get
- Picture-supported mats for matching with strong visual support
- Blank mats for sorting by sound without picture clues
- Uppercase and lowercase letters on every mat
- Color and black-and-white versions of the mats and picture cards
- One simple routine children can repeat with letter after letter
Print, laminate and start sorting!
What's Included
- Picture-supported beginning sounds sorting mats in color (each mat includes six pictures, so children can match the picture cards directly to the mat)
- Blank beginning sounds sorting mats in color (the target uppercase and lowercase letter with empty sorting boxes)
- Picture-supported beginning sounds sorting mats in black-and-white
- Blank beginning sounds sorting mats in black-and-white
- Beginning sounds picture cards in color and black-and-white
- Uppercase and lowercase letters on each mat, such as Qq, Ii, Jj, Ll, Ww and Tt
- Picture cards such as watermelon, walrus, toaster and turtle
Why Teachers Love It
-
Two levels make differentiation simple: Start with the picture-supported mats for children who need visual matching support. Move to the blank mats when they are ready to sort by sound without picture clues.
-
The routine is easy to learn: Choose a mat, name the pictures, listen for the beginning sound and sort the cards. Once children know the routine, you can swap letters without reteaching.
-
Picture cards support oral language: Naming familiar objects while sorting supports vocabulary development, speech practice and listening skills.
-
Color and black-and-white options: Use the color mats for reusable centers and small groups and the black-and-white mats for lower-ink printing, student copies or take-home practice.
-
Repeated practice builds confidence: Beginning sounds take time to master, and these mats give children many chances to hear, say, match and sort initial sounds.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Beginning sounds: Children listen for and isolate the first sound in each picture word.
-
Phonemic awareness: Children hear and compare the sounds in spoken words, the skill that prepares them for phonics, reading and spelling.
-
Letter recognition: Children identify the uppercase and lowercase target letter at the top of each mat.
-
Letter-sound correspondence: Children connect each beginning sound to the letter that represents it.
-
Matching and sorting: Children match pictures with the same initial sound and sort cards onto the mat.
-
Vocabulary and oral language: Naming each picture card builds vocabulary and gives children practice speaking.
-
Fine motor skills: Picking up and placing cards strengthens small hand muscles.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Following directions
- Maintaining attention
- Communicating choices
- Working independently
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Choose a letter mat. Begin with the picture-supported mat for extra visual support, or choose the blank sorting mat when children are ready for a more independent challenge.
Step 2: Name the letter, sound and pictures. Children look at the uppercase and lowercase letter at the top of the mat, say the letter sound and name each picture card.
Step 3: Sort the picture cards by beginning sound. On the picture-supported mats, children match each card to the same picture. On the blank mats, children place the matching cards in the empty boxes.
Easy Differentiation
Every group has children at different stages with letters and sounds. These mats are easy to adjust so each child can be successful.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the picture-supported mats so children can match picture to picture
- Name each picture together and stretch out the first sound before sorting
- Offer only a few picture cards at a time
- Work on one letter until children feel confident
For On-Level Practice
- Sort picture cards on the picture-supported mats in literacy centers
- Say the letter sound and each picture name out loud while sorting
- Move to the blank mats once children sort with ease
- Use the black-and-white mats for extra practice at home
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the blank mats so children sort by sound alone
- Mix picture cards from two or three letters and sort them onto the right mats
- Ask children to name another word that begins with the same sound
- Use the blank mats as a quick, informal initial sound assessment
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the picture cards for speech vocabulary and articulation practice
- Model a short sentence frame such as "___ starts with ___."
- Laminate the cards for children who need extra practice picking up and placing pieces
- Keep the routine the same for each letter so children know what to expect
- Give extra processing time as children name each picture
