Real and nonsense CVC words come to life in this Spin & Win board game! Spin it, spell it and WIN it! CVC words are short consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat or hop, and in this hands-on game early readers spin three spinners to build a word, blend the sounds and decide if the word is real or nonsense.
With rainbow-bright visuals, color-coded spinners and a playful game board path, this literacy center is a phonics game your students will want to play again and again. It is perfect for preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade, supporting early readers as they master letter-sound blending and build phonemic awareness, all while sneaking in some giggles and fine motor skills!

Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Blending and decoding CVC words: Children spin and combine letters to make consonant-vowel-consonant words and learn how sounds form words.
-
Phoneme segmentation and sound-letter association: Breaking apart and blending beginning, middle and ending sounds strengthens phonemic awareness.
-
Real and nonsense word identification: Children decide if each word they build is a real word, supporting decoding fluency.
-
Letter recognition and handwriting: Children write each sound and then the whole word, practicing letter formation and phonics skills.
-
Short vowel sounds: The vowel spinner gives children repeated practice reading the middle vowel in each word.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game in color or black and white and follow the assembly directions to set it up for a center or file folder. Each player places their marker on the "Start" star.
Step 2: Players spin all three spinners: beginning, vowel and ending sounds. They write the letters in the color-coded boxes on the write-and-wipe board, blend the sounds and write the full word below.
Step 3: Players decide if the word is real or nonsense. A real word (like "cat" or "hop") moves ahead 2 spaces and a nonsense word (like "teg" or "mog") moves ahead 1 space. Continue until someone reaches the End star! Children can record each word on their Real or Nonsense? sheet for extra decoding assessment.
Easy Differentiation
Early readers are at many different points with blending and decoding. This game is easy to adjust so every player can build words with success.
