CVC word Bump! games make reading practice a laugh-out-loud competition! This set of 20+ CVC Word Family Bump! Games covers every short vowel, so kids practice CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words, like the ones in the -at or -ig families) with every spin.
Each spin of the spinner gets students reading, matching and racing to "bump" their opponent's marker off the board. Kids find the picture that matches the word, claim the space and stack a second marker to freeze it. You'll love how easy these file folder games are to prep and organize. Your students will love how exciting they are to play.
With these CVC word family games, you get
- 20+ Bump! games that cover word families for all five short vowels
- Full-color and black-and-white versions of every game
- File folder labels for easy organization and storage

Print the version you need: Choose full color for bright centers or black and white for easy, ink-friendly printing.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Decoding CVC words: Children read each word on the spinner by blending its three sounds.
-
Short vowel sounds: Every game focuses on a short vowel in the middle of the word.
-
Word family recognition: Children notice that words in the same family, such as -at or -ig, share the same ending and change only the first sound.
-
Word to picture matching: Children check their reading by finding the picture that matches the word.
-
Visual discrimination: Close attention to letter order helps children tell similar words apart.
-
Fine motor coordination: Placing and stacking markers builds eye-hand coordination.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Waiting during group play
- Following directions
- Maintaining attention
- Working independently
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game for the word family you are teaching in color or black and white. Assemble it inside a file folder with its label and keep the spinner and recording sheets with it.
Step 2: Players take turns spinning the spinner and reading the word. They find the picture that matches the CVC word and place a marker on that space. If another player's marker is already there, "Bump!" it off the spot. If their own marker is already there, they stack a second one to "freeze" the space.
Step 3: Keep playing until all of the pictures are frozen. Players count their frozen spaces and the player with the most wins! Children can record the words they read on the recording sheet.
Materials You'll Need
- Game markers or counters
- File folders
Easy Differentiation
Every group of readers is at a different place with short vowels. These games make it easy to give each child the right level of practice.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with one word family, such as -at, before moving on
- Name the pictures on the board together before playing
- Tap each sound in the word and blend it together with the child
- Play cooperatively without bumping so children can focus on reading
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written in pairs or small groups
- Rotate through the word families for the vowel you are teaching
- Use the recording sheets during literacy centers
For an Extra Challenge
- Play the mixed /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/ or /u/ games
- Ask children to read the word aloud before they look for the picture
- Have children use a word from the game in a spoken sentence
- Challenge children to name more words in the same word family
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the picture boards to practice vocabulary and target sounds
- Practice visual scanning while children search the board for the matching picture
- Use larger counters for children who are building fine motor control
- Give extra processing time and model each step before children begin
