Fine motor LEGO® mats that work all year long! The Fine Motor LEGO® Pack includes 10 themed sets of building mats, so preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade children can build pictures with LEGO® bricks in September, in May and every month in between.

On each mat, children build a picture by matching brick colors to the design, using one-to-one correspondence as they place each brick. Then they identify the colors used in the picture and look closely at three small pictures to find the one that is different. Every mat gives little hands plenty of fine motor work while also building visual motor skills, color matching and copying a design.

With this LEGO® fine motor pack, you get:

  • 10 themes that fit any time of year
  • 80 fine motor mats across the 10 themes
  • Fine motor, visual motor and early math skills on every mat
  • An easy fit for morning work, centers and rainy day activities

Set out a bin of bricks and a mat and children are ready to build.

  • Visual motor skills: Children follow the picture to place each brick in the right spot.
  • Color matching and color identification: Children match brick colors to the design and name the colors used in each picture.
  • One-to-one correspondence: Children place one brick in each space of the picture.
  • Copying a design: Children copy the color layout of each design brick by brick.
  • Visual scanning and visual discrimination: Children scan the page and compare three pictures to find the one that is different.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Following directions
  • Maintaining attention
  • Sticking with a task until the picture is complete
  • Working independently
  • Communicating choices
  • Building confidence

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose a theme and print the mats. Slide them into sheet protectors or laminate them so they last all year.

Step 2: Set out LEGO® bricks in the colors shown on the mat. Children build the picture by placing a matching brick on each space.

Step 3: Have children name the colors used in the picture and then find the picture that is different.

Materials You'll Need

  • Regular-size LEGO® bricks in the colors shown on each mat (the traditional small bricks, not the larger DUPLO® bricks)
  • Each printed base board is 20x20 and sized to match LEGO® bricks. Print at actual size, since printer settings can change the size slightly.
  • Sheet protectors or laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)

Easy Differentiation

Children come to fine motor work with very different hand skills and attention spans. These mats are easy to adjust for each of them.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Offer only the brick colors needed for that mat
  • Sort the bricks by color into small cups before children begin
  • Cover part of the picture with paper and build one row at a time
  • Point to each space as the child places a brick
  • Model the find-the-difference task before children try it

For On-Level Practice

  • Build the full picture independently
  • Name each color used in the picture
  • Find the picture that is different and explain what changed
  • Move through several mats in the same theme

For an Extra Challenge

  • Build the picture beside the mat by copying the design
  • Count how many bricks of each color the picture uses
  • Mix all of the brick colors together so children find the right ones
  • Describe exactly how the different picture is not like the others

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice color words and theme vocabulary such as bear, rocket or pizza while building
  • Use short language frames such as "I need a ___ brick."
  • Offer a choice between two bricks when a child is choosing a color
  • Place bricks in a tray within easy reach to reduce searching
  • Focus on pincer grasp and pressing bricks firmly into place during OT sessions
  • Give extra processing time before the find-the-difference task

Perfect For

  • Morning work
  • Fine motor centers in preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade
  • Literacy centers
  • Rainy day activities
  • Indoor recess
  • Small groups
  • OT sessions
  • Special education classrooms
  • Early finishers
  • Homeschool
  • Substitute plans

Standards

These LEGO® mats support preschool through 1st grade standards in the 2022 Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines, Virginia's Early Learning and Development Standards (2021), Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):

  • Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.IX.B.1: Show control in tasks that take small-muscle strength. Pinching and pressing bricks onto each space builds hand strength.
  • Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.IX.B.2: Show growing control in tasks that need eye-hand coordination. Children look at the design and place each brick in the right spot.
  • Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.E.1: Sort objects that are the same and different. Children sort bricks by color and find the one picture that does not match the others.
  • Virginia ELDS HPD3.1: Use eyes and hands together, matching each brick to its place on the mat.
  • Virginia ELDS HPD3.2: Develop small muscle control while picking up and pressing small bricks.
  • CCSS K.MD.B.3: Classify objects into categories and count how many are in each. Children sort bricks by color and count how many of each color a picture needs.
  • TEKS Math K.8.A: Collect, sort and organize objects into two or three categories, such as the brick colors used in one picture.
  • VA SOL Math K.PS.1.a: Sort and classify concrete objects by one attribute, such as color.
  • CCSS 1.MD.C.4: Organize data in up to three categories and tell how many more or less are in one group. First graders count the bricks of each color and compare the totals.
