Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each puppy first keeps every player watching the board.
  • Pet vocabulary kids care about: Children name dogs, bowls, leashes and doghouses, which builds expressive and receptive vocabulary.
  • Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the cards and you are ready to play.
  • Three ways to play: Use it as a group race, a calm independent activity or side-by-side parallel play.
  • Made for therapy and intervention: The picture-to-word matching makes it a natural fit for speech sessions, OT visual scanning practice, RTI groups and ELL support.
  • Works in every setting: Use it in classrooms, therapy sessions and homeschool with the same simple rules.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Vocabulary development: Children name and describe dogs, bones, bowls, leashes and other pet supplies.
  • Articulation: Kids practice clear speech as they say each dog word out loud during play.
  • Visual discrimination: Learners scan busy boards to find the exact dog or pet object that matches their card.
  • Attention and focus: Racing to be the first to find a match keeps kids sharp and engaged.
  • Language and communication: Players name, describe and use the pictured words in sentences, which supports ELL and ESL learners.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the dog themed image cards, I Spy game boards and token cards. Laminate for long-term use and cut the pieces apart.

Step 2: Choose one pet theme game board and place it in the center of the table where all players can see it. Deal image cards face down to each player.

Step 3: All players flip one card at the same time and race to find the matching dog or pet object on the board. The first player to touch or point to it wins a token. Keep flipping and matching until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens wins!

Bonus Play Options

Independent play: Give one student an I Spy game board and the full stack of dog themed picture cards. They flip each card, find the picture and cover it with a mini eraser or token. This builds focus, visual scanning and vocabulary without the pressure of competing against others.

Parallel play: Two players use separate I Spy game boards and take turns flipping and matching their own dog themed picture cards at their own pace. This works well for children who need personal space, are just beginning to join group activities or do best in a relaxed, non-competitive setting.

Easy Differentiation

Every group of players brings different visual skills, language needs and attention spans. These play options make the game easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with independent play and a small stack of image cards
  • Name each dog and pet item together before the game begins
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Cover each match with a mini eraser or token

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the race version as written with a partner or small group
  • Name each picture out loud when you find it
  • Rotate through different game boards
  • Count the tokens at the end to see who won

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the full deck of 40 image cards in one game
  • Tell how each item helps care for a dog before collecting a token
  • Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "at the top" or "next to the doghouse"
  • Find the picture before a short timer runs out

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice dog vocabulary and target sounds as children name each picture
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___ for the puppy."
  • Build visual scanning and fine motor control as children flip cards, grab tokens and point to matches
  • Use parallel play for children who need personal space
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Pet theme and animal units
  • Literacy center warm-ups
  • RTI and small group interventions
  • Speech therapy articulation games
  • Occupational therapy visual scanning and fine motor practice
  • ELL and ESL vocabulary support
