Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids stay focused and excited: The fast "spy it first" race keeps every player watching the board.
  • Earth Day vocabulary in action: Children name and talk about words like recycle, compost, planet and globe through repeated play.
  • Real-world connections: Familiar items like cans, boxes and bottles help children recognize what can be recycled at home and at school.
  • Made for therapy and ELL support: Naming each picture supports articulation goals, and clear visuals help English learners connect new words to real objects.
  • Flexible play: Play competitively, cooperatively with a shared deck or independently at a quiet center.
  • Easy prep: Print, laminate and cut once, then pull the game out every spring.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Earth Day vocabulary: Students learn and use words like recycle, compost, planet and globe as they name each picture.
  • Visual discrimination: Kids carefully scan busy boards to find each matching recycling or compost picture.
  • Expressive language and articulation: Players name, describe and discuss the pictures they spy, practicing clear speech sounds.
  • Early science thinking: Children observe details and talk about recycling, composting and caring for the environment.
  • Attention and focus: Quick rounds build concentration as students identify details and spot matches.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and token cards. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Choose a game board filled with Earth Day pictures and place it where everyone can see. Deal the image cards evenly to each player, face down, or use a shared deck for group play.

Step 3: All players flip their top card at the same time and race to spy the match. The first player to find the matching picture on the board earns a token. Keep flipping, matching and spotting until all the cards have been played. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Students can play solo by flipping cards one at a time and covering each matching picture on their board. This version is perfect for quiet centers, early finishers or speech therapy sessions focused on attention and articulation.

Easy Differentiation

Every child brings different strengths to Earth Day learning. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Point to one area of the board at a time to narrow the search
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Sort the image cards into groups, such as recycling and compost
  • Describe each picture and tell what could be reused or recycled
  • Use each word in a sentence about caring for the Earth

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice target speech sounds while naming Earth Day pictures
  • Build visual scanning, fine motor coordination and hand-eye coordination in occupational therapy as children point to pictures and place tokens
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a recycling truck."
  • Connect spoken English words to familiar, real-world visuals for ELL and ESL learners
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Earth Day centers and science units
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • ELL and ESL support
  • Small groups
  • Early finishers and indoor recess
  • Substitute plans
  • Homeschool and family game nights
