How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game boards, picture cards and token cards. Laminate for durability and cut apart the pieces.
Step 2: Choose a game board and place it in the center where all players can see it. Deal each player a small stack of cards face down. You can also draw from a shared pile.
Step 3: Everyone flips the top card at the same time and races to spot the matching picture on the board. The first player to find it earns a token. Keep playing until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens wins!
Independent Play
Give one child an I Spy game board and the full stack of firefighter picture cards. The child flips each picture card, finds the picture on the board and covers it with a mini eraser or token. This builds visual focus and vocabulary independently.
Parallel Play
Two players use separate I Spy game boards and take turns flipping and matching their own firefighter picture cards at their own pace. This is great for learners who need personal space or are just beginning to join group activities.
Easy Differentiation
Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's emotional and developmental needs.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
- Name each picture together before the game begins
- Try parallel play so children can match at their own pace
- Play cooperatively without the race so children can search without pressure
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written in a small group
- Name each picture out loud when you find it
- Rotate through different game boards
- Count tokens at the end to see who won
For an Extra Challenge
- Tell how a firefighter uses each tool after finding it
- Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "next to the fire truck"
- Switch to a new game board every round
- Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Target vocabulary and articulation goals as children name each picture
- Build visual scanning and quick reaction time in OT sessions
- Help ELL/ESL learners connect new words to real-world objects with strong visual cues
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
- Give extra processing time and use independent or parallel play when needed
