Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids stay alert and laughing: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
  • One sound in focus: Every card and board centers on the /f/ sound, so students hear it again and again.
  • Beginning, middle and ending sounds: Words like fish, muffin and roof show students that /f/ can appear anywhere in a word.
  • Made for speech therapy: Naming each picture gives repeated practice saying the /f/ sound in a natural setting.
  • Flexible play: Use the game with a small group, one student at an independent station or two students side by side.
  • Easy to store: Simply print, laminate, cut and go! The small storage size makes it super easy to keep everything in one place.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Phonics and articulation: Students practice isolating the /f/ sound in beginning, middle and ending positions.
  • Phonemic awareness: Children practice blending and segmenting sounds in words like fig, fan, sniff and traffic.
  • Visual discrimination: Kids strengthen scanning skills as they search busy boards to find matching images quickly.
  • Vocabulary growth: Repeated exposure to F words, such as flamingo, giraffe and scarf, expands expressive and receptive language.
  • Fine motor practice: Handling cards and tokens builds coordination and strengthens small hand muscles.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Select a game board and place it where everyone can see. Give each player a stack of image cards.

Step 3: Each player flips a card from their stack and everyone searches the board for the matching image. The first player to point to the correct picture earns a token. Continue flipping and finding until all the cards have been matched. The player with the most tokens at the end wins!

Independent Station

Students use one board and a pile of cards to play solo. They flip, find and cover images at their own pace.

Side-by-Side Play

Two students play separately with identical boards, giving each the chance to practice without competition.

Challenge Mode

Use more than one board at a time to increase the difficulty and stretch attention skills.

Easy Differentiation

Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together and stress the /f/ sound before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Start with pictures that begin with /f/, such as fish, fan and fork
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Try Challenge Mode with more than one board at a time
  • Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
  • Sort the cards by where the /f/ sound falls: beginning, middle or end
  • Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Target articulation goals for letter F words while keeping sessions fun
  • Target visual scanning, fine motor skills and quick reaction time in occupational therapy
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a fish."
  • Build vocabulary with strong visual cues and repeated practice
  • Use side-by-side play for students who do better without competition
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers and guided reading warm-ups
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • ELL and ESL support
  • Small groups
  • Early finishers and rainy day fun
