Letter sound L I Spy game fun for phonics centers, speech therapy and ELL groups! Teaching the letter sound L doesn't have to feel like drill work. The I Spy Board Game Letter Sound L is an exciting, hands-on race that keeps kids hunting for lions, leaves and lollipops.
With bright, engaging images and simple gameplay, this interactive activity helps children practice the beginning, middle and ending L sound while strengthening articulation, phonemic awareness and vocabulary skills. (Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and work with the separate sounds in spoken words.) The pictures put /l/ at the start of words like lion, leaf, lemon and ladder, in the middle of words like lollipop and gorilla and at the end of words like purple and squirrel.
Whether you are working on phonics in literacy centers, articulation in speech therapy or vocabulary with ELL and ESL students, this I Spy game makes learning fun and hands-on. Kids will love racing to spy their picture first, and you'll love how much repetition they get without even noticing.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.
Step 2: Choose one game board for the round and place it in the center where everyone can see. Give each player a small stack of letter L image cards, face down.
Step 3: Everyone flips the top card at the same time and races to find the matching picture on the board. The first player to find the match earns a token. Continue until all the cards are matched. The player with the most tokens wins!
Independent Play
For independent play, give one student a game board and the full stack of cards. They flip each card and cover the matching picture with a token at their own pace.
Partner Play
Two students can play the game together as partners, which works well in therapy sessions and small groups.
Easy Differentiation
Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Name each picture together and stress the /l/ sound before playing

For On-Level Practice

- Say each picture name aloud when you find it
- Rotate through the 10 different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
