Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids stay alert and engaged: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
  • One sound in focus: Every card and board centers on the /n/ sound, so students hear it again and again.
  • Beginning, middle and ending sounds: Words like nest, lion and fan show students that /n/ can appear in different spots in a word.
  • Made for speech therapy: Naming each picture gives repeated practice saying the /n/ sound in a natural setting.
  • Strong visual support: Labeled pictures make new words easier for ELL students to learn and recall.
  • Flexible play: Use the game with a small group, one student at an independent station or two students side by side.
  • Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut once, then pull it out for centers, sub plans or therapy sessions all year.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Phonics and articulation: Students practice identifying the letter sound N in beginning, middle and ending sound positions.
  • Phonemic awareness: Kids isolate, blend and pronounce the /n/ sound in a variety of words. (Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and work with the separate sounds in spoken words.)
  • Vocabulary development: New N words, such as necklace, north and nectarine, build expressive language and reading readiness.
  • Visual discrimination and scanning: Learners carefully search busy I Spy boards to find each picture, supporting focus and attention to detail.
  • Reading confidence: Matching printed words and pictures builds early literacy skills in a playful way.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Following directions

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Place one Letter Sound N game board in the center where everyone can see it. Give each player a small stack of image cards, or let players draw from one shared pile.

Step 3: All players flip over their top card at the same time and race to find the matching image on the board. The first player to point to the correct picture wins a star token. Keep flipping, spying and collecting tokens until all the cards are matched. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Students flip cards one at a time and cover each match on the board with a mini eraser, counter or token.

Parallel Play

Two learners use separate boards and play side by side at their own pace without competition.

Easy Differentiation

Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together and stress the /n/ sound before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Start with pictures that begin with /n/, such as nest, nurse and nine
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Read the printed word on each image card before searching for the picture
  • Sort the cards by where the /n/ sound falls: beginning, middle or end
  • Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture
  • Name another word with the /n/ sound for each picture found

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Target articulation goals for beginning, middle and ending N words while keeping sessions fun
  • Target visual scanning, fine motor skills and quick reaction time in occupational therapy
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a nest."
  • Build vocabulary with strong visual cues and repeated practice
  • Use parallel play for students who do better without competition
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Phonics and literacy centers
  • Speech therapy articulation practice
  • Occupational therapy sessions
  • ELL and ESL vocabulary building
  • Small groups
  • Sub plans and early finishers
  • Homeschool learning
