How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Pick a Letter Sound W I Spy game board and place it in the center. Deal the W image cards face down to each player.

Step 3: Players flip one card at a time and race to find the picture on the board. The first to spot it earns a star token. Keep playing until all cards are matched. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Great for quiet centers. Students flip cards and cover matches with tokens or mini erasers.

Parallel Play

Two learners play side by side at their own pace with separate boards. Perfect for children who need personal space or lower competition.

Easy Differentiation

Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together and stress the /w/ sound before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Start with familiar pictures, such as wagon, whale and window
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
  • Name another word that begins with /w/ for each picture found
  • Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture
  • Play with more than one board at a time

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Target articulation goals for /w/ words while keeping sessions fun
  • Build fine motor skills and visual scanning as children handle tokens and search the boards
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a whale."
  • Build vocabulary with strong visual cues and repeated practice
  • Use parallel play for students who do better without competition
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers and small group rotations
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • ELL and ESL vocabulary support
  • Sub plans
  • Homeschool
  • Indoor recess and early finishers
