R-controlled vowels I Spy game practice for phonics centers, speech therapy and small groups! Learning tricky R-controlled vowels doesn't have to feel overwhelming for kids. This I Spy Board Game R-Controlled Vowels is a playful phonics race where children spot words like farm, yarn, germ, north and shark while laughing and playing together.
An R-controlled vowel is a vowel followed by the letter R, which changes the vowel's sound, as in farm, germ, circle, north and turtle. Every round gives students quick practice hearing, saying and reading the /ar/, /er/, /ir/, /or/ and /ur/ sounds along with strong visual discrimination (the ability to notice small differences between pictures).
Whether you're teaching phonics in a literacy center, working on articulation goals in speech therapy or adding hands-on practice to your homeschool routine, this easy-prep game blends vocabulary, focus and fun.

R-controlled vowel recognition: Students connect tricky R-controlled sounds with pictures and words for stronger decoding.

-
Vocabulary building: With words like farm, scarf, burger, circle and north, students grow their vocabulary while linking words to pictures.
-
Visual discrimination: Kids sharpen attention to detail by searching busy game boards for each target picture.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game boards, picture cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.
Step 2: Choose one of the 10 I Spy boards and place it in the center where all players can clearly see it. Shuffle the 40 R-controlled vowel picture cards and deal them into even stacks, face down. For larger groups, place the cards in a shared draw pile.
Step 3: All players flip their top card at the same time and race to find the matching picture on the board. The first player to spot the correct match collects a star token or keeps the card as a point. Keep flipping and matching until the deck is finished. The player with the most tokens wins!
Independent Play
Give one student a single R-controlled vowels I Spy board and the full stack of picture cards. The child flips one card at a time, searches the board for the matching picture and covers it with a mini eraser, counter or star token. This setup works well for literacy centers, homeschool routines, RTI (Response to Intervention, a system of extra support) and early finishers who need a screen-free way to keep practicing.
Parallel Play
Two students each receive their own I Spy board. They take turns flipping cards from a shared deck but only search on their own boards. This format works beautifully in speech therapy, small group intervention or ELL support, where some students may need personal space or a slower pace.
Easy Differentiation
Every learner comes to R-controlled vowels at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Name each picture together and model the R-controlled sound before playing
- Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
- Start with one sound at a time, such as /ar/ in farm, yarn and shark
- Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written with a small group
- Say each picture name aloud when you find it
- Rotate through the 10 different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
- Read the word on each picture card before searching for the picture
- Sort the cards by spelling: ar, er, ir, or and ur
- Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture
- Name another word with the same R-controlled sound for each picture found
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Target articulation goals for R-controlled vowel words while keeping sessions fun
- Target visual scanning, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in occupational therapy as children flip cards, point to matches and collect tokens
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a turtle."
- Build vocabulary with clear pictures that connect R-controlled words to real-world objects
- Use parallel play for students who do better without competition
- Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed
