  • Beginning, middle and ending sounds: Words like bat, bubbles and cub show students that /b/ can appear anywhere in a word.
  • Made for speech therapy: Naming each picture gives repeated practice with /b/ words for articulation goals.
  • Flexible play: Use the game with partners, small groups, one student working independently or two students in parallel play.
  • Easy to store: Simply print, laminate, cut and go! The small storage size makes it super easy to keep everything in one place.

Primary Academic Skills

  • Letter sound B recognition: Students practice identifying the beginning, middle and ending /b/ sound through picture-word matching.
  • Phonemic awareness and decoding: Saying each picture name helps children blend and segment familiar letter B words.
  • Articulation practice: Children say and repeat words with clear emphasis on the /b/ sound to encourage speech development.
  • Visual discrimination: Players scan the game board carefully to match images, building attention to detail.
  • Vocabulary and language development: Children expand word knowledge as they connect spoken words to pictures, such as bubbles, burger and bee.

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Choose a game board for the round and place it in the center. Deal image cards face down to each player.

Step 3: All players flip over their top card at the same time and race to locate the matching image on the board. The first player to find and point to the image wins a token for that round. Continue until all cards have been used. The player with the most tokens at the end wins!

Independent Play

One student uses a game board and all the cards, finding and covering each image with tokens or mini erasers.

Parallel Play

Two students play side by side on separate boards with their own card stacks. This option is perfect for learners who need their own space.

Materials You'll Need

  • Laminating supplies (for long-term use)
  • Mini erasers or tokens (for independent play)

Easy Differentiation

Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together and stress the /b/ sound before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Start with pictures that begin with /b/, such as ball, baby and bus
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with partners or a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
  • Sort the cards by where the /b/ sound falls: beginning, middle or end
  • Use each word in a sentence or name a rhyming word for each picture found

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Target articulation goals for letter B words while keeping sessions fun
  • Target fine motor movement and visual scanning in the same activity
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ball."
  • Connect each vocabulary word with its picture to practice pronunciation and understanding
  • Use parallel play for students who need their own space
