What's Included

  • 10 colorful I Spy game boards with bright, playful illustrations
  • 40 short vowel E image cards (examples include elf, exit, sled, vet, egg and red, plus excavator, engine, edge, end and spell)
  • 20 printable star tokens to use as points or rewards
  • Step-by-step teacher instructions for setup and multiple ways to play

Every game board is packed with cheerful illustrations that give emerging readers repeated exposure to the short vowel E sound at the beginning and in the middle of words.

Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
  • One vowel sound in focus: Every card and board centers on the short vowel E sound, so students hear it again and again.
  • Beginning, middle and longer words: Short e shows up at the start of words, in CVC words and in longer words, so students hear it in different places.
  • Made for speech therapy: Naming each picture gives repeated practice with short vowel E words for articulation goals.
  • Great for RTI groups: The picture and word matching makes it a quick check of which students connect words and images.
  • Easy to store: Simply print, laminate, cut and go! The small storage size makes it easy to keep everything in one place.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Short vowel E recognition: Students practice identifying the short e sound in CVC words and longer words through picture-word matching.
  • Phonemic awareness and decoding: Saying each picture name helps children segment and blend the sounds in consonant-vowel-consonant words.
  • Visual discrimination: Players pay close attention to detail as they scan the board to find matching pictures.
  • Vocabulary and language development: Children connect spoken words to real-world pictures, such as elf, sled and excavator.
  • Communication: Students name, describe and use the pictured words in sentences to practice oral language.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the short vowel E image cards, I Spy game boards and token cards. Laminate for long-term use and cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Choose one short vowel E I Spy game board and place it in the center. Deal the image cards to each player, face down.

Step 3: All players flip one card at a time and race to find the matching picture on the board. The first player to spot the correct picture wins a token! Keep flipping and matching until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Give one student an I Spy game board and the full stack of image cards. They flip each short vowel E card, find the picture and cover it with a mini eraser or token. This builds visual focus and word recognition independently.

Parallel Play

Two players use separate I Spy game boards and take turns flipping and matching their own image cards at their own pace. This option is great for learners who need personal space or are just beginning to join group activities.

Therapy Adaptations

Use the game in speech therapy or occupational therapy to target articulation of short E words or visual motor skills like pointing, scanning and tracking.

Materials You'll Need

  • Laminating supplies (for long-term use)
  • Mini erasers or tokens (for independent play)

Easy Differentiation

Every learner comes to vowel sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's emotional and developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together and stretch the short e sound before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with partners or a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
  • Sort the cards into words that begin with short e and words with short e in the middle
  • Name another short vowel E word for each picture found
  • Change the vowel in a CVC word and say the new word, such as vet and vat

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Target articulation goals for short vowel E words while keeping sessions fun
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy an egg."
  • Use independent play for visual scanning and fine motor practice
  • Use parallel play for students who need their own space
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers and guided reading warm-ups
  • RTI and small group interventions
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • ELL and ESL support
  • Homeschool
  • Early finishers and indoor recess fun
  • Substitute plans
