Why Teachers Love It
-
Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
-
One vowel sound in focus: Every card centers on the short vowel U sound, so children hear it and say it again and again.
-
Beginning, middle and longer words: Short u shows up at the start of words, in the middle of words and in two-syllable words, so children hear it in different places.
-
Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the boards, image cards and tokens and you are ready to play.
-
Flexible ways to play: Use it with partners and small groups or as an independent or parallel play activity.
-
Great for therapy sessions: Target articulation of short U words or visual-motor skills like pointing, scanning and tracking.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Short vowel U recognition: Children practice identifying short vowel u in CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words like hung) and simple two-syllable words through picture-word matching.
-
Phonemic awareness and decoding: Children strengthen segmenting and blending skills with consonant-vowel-consonant patterns.
-
Visual discrimination: Players pay attention to detail as they scan the board to find the correct picture.

Vocabulary and language development: Connecting spoken words to pictures supports both expressive and receptive language.
-
Oral language: Children describe and name the pictures and use the words in sentences.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print, laminate and cut out the game boards, image cards and tokens.
Step 2: Choose one game board and place it where all players can see it. Deal the image cards face down. Players flip their top card at the same time and race to spot the matching picture on the board.
Step 3: The first player to find the picture wins a token for that round. Keep playing until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens wins!
Independent Play
Let a child match the full deck of short vowel U cards to a single board. The child can cover each picture with a mini eraser or token to mark matches.
Parallel Play
Use two boards side by side for quiet partner practice. Each player flips a card and finds the match on their own board.
Therapy Adaptations
Use the game in speech therapy or occupational therapy to target articulation of short U words or visual-motor skills like pointing, scanning and tracking.
Easy Differentiation
Every group of readers brings different phonics skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

- Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
