Measurement and graphing activities for your preschool, pre-K and kindergarten math centers! This Measurement and Graphing pack has 20+ hands-on activities, so every child gets excited to compare, measure, order and graph with a wide variety of engaging centers.
Children decide which pictures are taller, shorter, heavier or lighter, put classroom objects such as pencils, glue bottles and paintbrushes in size order and measure the room with cubes. Then they roll, spin and spy to collect data and build their own graphs. Non-standard measurement means measuring with everyday objects such as cubes in place of a ruler, which is how young children first learn what length means.
With this measurement and graphing pack, you get
- 20+ measurement and graphing activities in one pack
- Clip cards for shorter, taller, weighs more and weighs less
- Size order, balance scale and non-standard measurement activities
- I Spy, roll and graph and spin and graph games, plus whole class graphs
- Every activity in both color and black and white
Print the activities that fit your week and your measurement unit is ready to go!

So many ways to compare: Children compare height, length and weight with clip cards, grids, size order mats and a balance scale activity.
-
Real-world measuring: Measure the Room gets children up and measuring real classroom objects.
-
Graphing kids enjoy: I Spy, roll and graph and spin and graph games make collecting data feel like a game.

Whole class options: The whole class roll and graph and "My Favorite Is" graph bring everyone together.
-
Printer-friendly: Every activity comes in color and black and white.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Comparing height and length: Children decide which object is taller or shorter.
-
Comparing weight: Clip cards and the balance scale activity ask which object weighs more or less.
-
Ordering by size: Size order mats and cards have children arrange objects from shortest to tallest and tallest to shortest.
-
Non-standard measurement: Children measure objects with cube units and record how long they are.
-
Collecting and graphing data: Roll, spin and I Spy graphing games build simple graphs.
-
Reading graphs: Children talk about which group has more, fewer or the same.
-
Counting: Children count cube units and graph marks as they work.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Following directions
- Taking turns
- Making and checking predictions
- Using mathematical language
- Working independently
- Communicating choices
How to Use It
Step 1: Choose the measurement or graphing activities that fit your lesson. Print them in color or black and white and laminate the mats and cards you plan to reuse.
Step 2: Model one activity with the class, such as the whole class roll and graph or the "My Favorite Is" graph. Talk about words such as taller, shorter, heavier, lighter, more and fewer.
Step 3: Set the clip cards, size order mats, Measure the Room and spin and graph games out in math centers or small groups. Rotate in new activities to keep practice fresh.
Easy Differentiation
Young learners come to measurement and graphing with very different skills. These activities are easy to adjust for each child.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the taller and shorter clip cards before adding weight
- Compare just two objects at a time before using the size order mats
- Use real objects next to the cards so children can see and feel the difference
- Graph together as a whole class before children graph on their own
For On-Level Practice
- Use the size order mats and card sets independently
- Complete the "Which is...?" grids in a small group
- Play the roll and graph and spin and graph games with a partner
- Measure the room with cubes and record the results
For an Extra Challenge
- Order all of the cards in a size order set from shortest to tallest and back again
- Predict how many cubes long an object is, then measure to check
- Tell how many more are in one graph column than another
- Ask and answer questions about the whole class graphs
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice comparing words such as taller, shorter, heavier and lighter
- Use a sentence frame such as "The ___ is taller than the ___."
- Use clip cards for fine motor practice
- Let children point to or place the answer when speaking is hard
- Give extra processing time and model each activity first
Perfect For
- Preschool, pre-K and kindergarten math centers

Standards
These measurement and graphing activities support the 2022 Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and Virginia's Early Learning and Development Standards (2021), plus kindergarten and 1st grade standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):
Common Core State Standards
-
CCSS K.MD.A.1: Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight.
-
CCSS K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects to see which has more or less of an attribute, such as which is taller or heavier.
-
CCSS K.MD.B.3: Classify objects into categories and count how many are in each, as in the graphing games.
-
CCSS 1.MD.A.1: Order three objects by length with the size order mats and cards.
-
CCSS 1.MD.A.2: Express the length of an object as a whole number of units by laying cubes end to end.
-
CCSS 1.MD.C.4: Organize data in up to three categories and tell how many more or less are in one group.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines
-
Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.D.1: Recognize and compare heights or lengths of people or objects with the taller and shorter clip cards and size order mats.
-
Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.D.3: Recognize and compare weights of objects with the weight clip cards and balance scale activity.
-
Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.E.2: Collect data and organize it in a graph with the roll, spin and I Spy graphing games.
Texas TEKS
-
TEKS Math K.7.A: Give an example of a measurable attribute of an object, including length and weight.
-
TEKS Math K.7.B: Compare two objects with a common measurable attribute and describe the difference.
-
TEKS Math K.8.A: Collect, sort and organize data into two or three categories.
-
TEKS Math K.8.B: Use data to create real-object and picture graphs.
-
TEKS Math K.8.C: Draw conclusions from real-object and picture graphs.
-
TEKS Math 1.7.B: Show that the length of an object is the number of same-size units laid end to end with no gaps or overlaps.
-
TEKS Math 1.8.B: Use data to create picture and bar-type graphs.
Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards
-
Virginia ELDS CD3.5: Describe and compare objects by size and weight.
Virginia SOL
-
