Why Teachers Love It
-
Two skills in one game: Students multiply and then compare products using greater than and less than.
-
Endless practice: Every spin creates a new fact, so the game gives endless opportunities to build fluency.
-
Built-in accountability: The recording sheet lets you see the facts each student solved.
-
Reusable: Laminate the pieces once and use them all year.
-
Works for many grades: Use it for first fact practice or for review with upper elementary students.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Multiplication fact fluency: Students solve multiplication facts 0-10 with every spin.
-
Comparing products: Students decide which product is greater or less to know who moves.
-
Writing equations: Students write each fact and its product on the Write & Wipe Board.
-
Mental math: Quick recall keeps the game moving.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Following directions
- Using mathematical language
- Waiting during group play
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print and laminate the game board (page 4), two copies of the spinners (page 5), the Write & Wipe Boards (one for each player, pages 6-7) and the recording sheet (one for each player, page 8).
Step 2: Give each player a Write & Wipe Board, select the first player and place a marker on the "Start" space. Each player spins the spinners on their board one at a time, writes the numbers spun in the top level of their Write & Wipe Board and then writes the product in the bottom level.
Step 3: The player with the highest value moves ahead three spaces. The player with the lowest value moves back one space unless they are on the starting space. In case of a tie, both players move ahead one space. The game continues until one player makes it to the end space.
For example, if Player 1 spins 5 and 8 and Player 2 spins 3 and 4, Player 1 moves ahead three spaces and Player 2 moves back one space.
Materials You'll Need
- Laminating supplies
- Dry-erase markers for the Write & Wipe Boards
- A game marker for each player
Easy Differentiation
Students learn their multiplication facts at different speeds. These ideas make it easy to fit the game to each student.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Let students use a multiplication chart to check each product
- Have students say each fact aloud before writing it
- Play in teams so partners can talk through each fact
- Model a few rounds before students play on their own
For On-Level Practice
- Play in partners during math centers
- Have students state each comparison aloud, such as "40 is greater than 12"
- Use the recording sheet to track the facts solved
For an Extra Challenge
- Set a timer and see how many rounds students can finish
- Have students write the comparison with the >, < or = symbol
- Ask students to write the related division fact for each product
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice math vocabulary such as multiply, product, greater than and less than
- Use a sentence frame such as "My product is ___."
- Let students point to the spinner result if spinning is hard
- Give extra processing time for each round
Perfect For
- Math centers
- Partner games
- Small groups and RTI
- Fact fluency practice
- Upper elementary review
- Indoor recess
- Homeschool
