  • Continuing patterns: Children decide what comes next and extend the pattern.

  • Pattern types: Children work with AB, AAB, ABB and ABC patterns.
  • Finding the pattern rule: Children notice the part of the pattern that repeats.
  • Color recognition: Many patterns use colors, so children match and name colors as they build.
  • Fine motor skills: Snapping cubes, stringing beads and placing bears build hand strength and control.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Following directions
  • Making and checking predictions
  • Taking turns
  • Working independently
  • Maintaining attention
  • Using mathematical language

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose the pattern activities and pattern set that fit your class. Print the cards in color, laminate for durability and cut them apart.

Step 2: Introduce the pattern with the pattern posters. Model how to copy and continue a pattern with one set of manipulatives in a small group.

Step 3: Set the activities out in your math centers. Move children from the copy prompts to the continue cards and then the create cards. Rotate in new manipulatives and games all year.

Materials You'll Need

  • Snap cubes
  • Foam blocks
  • LEGO® bricks
  • Popsicle sticks

Easy Differentiation

Preschoolers come to patterns with very different skills. These activities are easy to adjust for each child.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with the AB pattern set
  • Use the "I can copy" prompts before moving to continue cards
  • Say the pattern aloud together, such as "red, blue, red, blue"
  • Offer only the manipulatives needed for one pattern

For On-Level Practice

  • Use the continue cards with the AAB and ABB sets
  • Play the pattern board game with a partner
  • Complete the popsicle stick patterns
  • Ask children to tell what comes next and why

For an Extra Challenge

  • Move to the ABC pattern set
  • Use the create cards without guidance
  • Build the same pattern with two different manipulatives
  • Have children make a pattern for a partner to continue

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice color words and position words such as next and after
  • Use a simple sentence frame such as "Next comes blue"
  • Build fine motor skills with pony beads, snap cubes and rainbow bears
  • Let children point to or place the next piece when speaking is hard
  • Give extra processing time and model each pattern first

Perfect For

  • Preschool and pre-K math centers
  • Small groups
  • Independent work
  • Partner games
  • Fine motor centers
  • Special education classrooms
  • Speech and ELL support
  • Homeschool preschool
