Alphabet hide and seek pocket chart game where every snowman could be hiding a hat! If you are working on letter recognition and your kids are bored after approximately 12 seconds, this is the kind of activity that saves the day. The Snowman Theme Alphabet Hide & Seek Pocket Chart Cards give preschool, pre-K and kindergarten students a playful letter recognition guessing game that keeps them engaged because they are doing something active.

Kids look at the letters, say the letter names out loud and take turns guessing which snowmen are hiding hats behind them. That repeated exposure is exactly what helps build strong alphabet recognition, especially for learners who need more practice with uppercase and lowercase letters. This is not an activity you use once and forget in a drawer. Bring it out for circle time, rotate it into literacy centers, use it with small groups or pull it for quick review when you have five minutes to fill and everyone's attention is… questionable at best.

With this snowman alphabet hide and seek game, you get

  • Uppercase and lowercase snowman letter cards in color and black and white
  • Snowman hat cards to hide behind the letters
  • Differentiated recording pages for uppercase and lowercase letters
  • A guessing game that is easy to differentiate for a wide range of learners
  • Repeated, playful practice with letter names again and again

Print, laminate and let the letter guessing begin.

What's Included

Everything you need for low-prep letter recognition practice is included, with both color and black-and-white options so you can choose what works best for your class:

  • Uppercase letter recognition snowman cards (color)
  • Lowercase letter recognition snowman cards (color)
  • Uppercase letter cards (black and white)
  • Lowercase letter cards (black and white)
  • Snowman hat hiding cards to tuck behind letters
  • 4 differentiated recording pages for uppercase and lowercase letter recognition
  • Simple teacher instructions with prep tips and play options

All cards are designed to fit a standard pocket chart (a hanging chart with clear pockets), making it easy to set up for circle time or whole-group instruction. If you do not have a pocket chart, you can spread the cards on a table or the floor and still get the same letter recognition benefits.

Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids stay engaged: There is a surprise element and a clear goal, so every child watches for the next hat.
  • Completely adjustable: You choose which letters and how many to display, so the game fits beginners and confident letter namers.
  • Works in many settings: Use it for circle time, small groups, literacy centers or a quick five-minute review without changing much.
  • A predictable routine: The game is simple to prep and structured enough that kids learn the routine fast.
  • Built-in accountability: Recording pages add a writing step without taking away the fun.
  • Confidence for strugglers: Students who find letter recognition hard often join in more willingly when it feels like a game.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Letter recognition: Students identify and name letters as they guess and reveal hidden hats.
  • Uppercase letters: Students practice identifying and naming uppercase letters, which is especially helpful for kindergarten readiness.
  • Lowercase letters: Students practice the lowercase letters many kids find trickier and need extra repetition with.
  • Visual discrimination: Students notice letter features and the differences between similar letters, such as b/d, p/q and m/n.
  • Oral language: Students say letter names out loud during each turn.
  • Early writing: The recording pages ask students to cross off guessed letters and write the correct answers.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Remembering previous guesses
  • Making and checking predictions
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose whether you want to focus on uppercase letters, lowercase letters or a mix. Place the letter cards into a pocket chart, on a table or on the floor so all letters are visible. Start with 3 to 5 letters for beginners and add more as students become confident.

Step 2: Have one student hide 1 to 8 snowman hats behind the letters while the others close their eyes.

Step 3: Students take turns guessing which letter is hiding a hat, saying the letter name out loud each turn. Reveal what is behind the letter card and keep going until all hats are found. Optional: use the recording pages to cross off guessed letters and write the correct answers.

Easy Differentiation

Children learn letters at very different rates. Because you choose the letters and how many to show, this game fits every learner.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Display just 3 letters and hide 1 snowman hat
  • Start with uppercase letters or letters in a child's name
  • Name each letter together before hiding the hats
  • Use the color cards for extra visual support

For On-Level Practice

  • Display 5 or more letters and hide 2-3 hats
  • Practice lowercase letters along with uppercase letters
  • Use the recording pages to cross off guesses and write correct letters
  • Play with a partner or small group as a literacy center

For an Extra Challenge

  • Display more letters and hide up to 8 hats
  • Include similar letters such as b and d together
  • Mix uppercase and lowercase cards in the same round
  • Let a child lead the game and check each guess

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Choose specific letters of focus for each child's goals
  • Use a short language frame such as "Is it behind the letter ___?"
  • Have children point to a letter to guess when naming is still emerging
  • Use the black and white cards to reduce visual clutter
  • Give extra processing time before each guess

Perfect For

  • Whole-group circle time
  • Small groups and intervention groups
  • Literacy centers
  • Winter theme units
  • Early finishers
  • Indoor recess
  • Speech therapy sessions
  • OT support
  • Homeschool letter recognition practice
