Uppercase and lowercase letter sorts that help children recognize every letter, no matter how it looks! These Alphabet Uppercase/Lowercase Letter Sorts give students fun practice with uppercase and lowercase skills while building letter recognition across different fonts.

Children cut or pick up each letter card and decide where it belongs: uppercase or lowercase. Because the letters come in many fonts, children learn that a letter can look a little different from one book or sign to the next and still be the same letter.

With these uppercase and lowercase letter sorts, you get

  • Alphabet sorting pages for uppercase and lowercase letter practice
  • Letters shown in different fonts for stronger letter recognition
  • A color version for laminated, reusable centers
  • A black and white version for morning work, take-home practice or fast finishers

Print the version you need and start sorting!

What's Included

  • Alphabet uppercase/lowercase letter sorting pages, with letter cards at the bottom of each page to cut out and sort
  • Letters in a variety of fonts
  • Two versions: color and black and white

Why Teachers Love It

  • Two versions for maximum versatility: Use the color pages for centers and the black and white pages for independent practice.
  • Reusable center in minutes: Laminate the whole page, cut out the letters at the bottom and store them in an envelope or baggie for your word work centers.
  • Color without the laminating cost: Slip a page into a page protector, plastic pocket or unsealed laminating pouch to use it as a center.
  • Real-world letter recognition: Different fonts help children recognize letters they see in books, signs and print around them.
  • Easy to send home: The black and white pages work well as take-home practice.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Uppercase and lowercase recognition: Children identify whether each letter card is uppercase or lowercase.
  • Letter recognition across fonts: Children learn to spot the same letter in different styles of print.
  • Sorting: Children place each letter card in the correct group on the sorting mat.
  • Visual discrimination: Children look closely at letter shapes to tell uppercase and lowercase forms apart.
  • Fine motor skills: Cutting out and handling small letter cards build hand control.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Following directions
  • Maintaining attention
  • Working independently
  • Making and checking predictions
  • Building confidence

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose your version. Print in color and laminate for a center, or print in black and white to use as morning work, take-home or a fast finisher activity.

Step 2: For a center, laminate the whole page and then cut out the letters at the bottom. Store the letters in an envelope or baggie. To skip laminating, place the page into a page protector, plastic pocket or unsealed individual laminating pouch.

Step 3: Model one sort together. Then have children sort each letter card by uppercase and lowercase and say the letter name as they place it.

Materials You'll Need

  • Laminating pouches and a laminator (optional)
  • Page protectors, plastic pockets or unsealed laminating pouches (optional)
  • Envelopes or baggies for storing letter cards

Easy Differentiation

Children learn letters at different paces. These sorts are easy to adjust for each learner.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with letters the child already knows
  • Sort only a few letter cards at a time
  • Show one uppercase and one lowercase example before the child begins
  • Trace each letter with a finger and name it together

For On-Level Practice

  • Sort all of the letter cards on a page
  • Say each letter name aloud while sorting
  • Use the laminated color version in word work centers
  • Send the black and white version home for extra practice

For an Extra Challenge

  • Mix the letter cards from two pages and sort them together
  • Ask children to say the letter sound as well as the letter name
  • Have children point out which fonts look the most different
  • Time a sort and try again to beat it

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice letter names and sounds as target words during the sort
  • Pre-cut the letter cards for children still building scissor skills
  • Use the laminated version so cards are easier to pick up and move
  • Reduce the number of cards and add more as confidence grows
  • Give extra processing time and model each step before children begin
