Alphabet hide and seek pocket chart game fun with a lunchbox favorite! This Peanut Butter & Jelly Alphabet Hide & Seek Pocket Chart Game is a hands-on letter recognition activity that preschool, pre-K and kindergarten students absolutely love.

How to Use It

Step 1: Print and laminate the alphabet cards and the peanut butter and jelly cards. Place the uppercase or lowercase alphabet cards into a pocket chart, on a table or on the floor so the alphabet is clearly visible. Begin with a small group of letters for early learners.

Step 2: One student or the teacher hides 3 to 5 peanut butter and jelly cards behind selected alphabet cards while others close their eyes.

Step 3: Students take turns guessing which letters are hiding the peanut butter or jelly by naming the letter aloud. Reveal what is behind the letter after each guess and review the letter name together. Use the optional recording pages to cross off guessed letters and write the correct uppercase or lowercase letters in the boxes.

Easy Differentiation

Children learn letters at very different rates. Because you choose the letters and how many to show, this game fits a wide range of learners.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Display just a few letters and hide 1 card
  • Start with uppercase letters or the letters in a child's name
  • Name each letter together before hiding the cards
  • Use the color cards for extra visual support

For On-Level Practice

  • Display more letters and hide 3 to 5 cards
  • Practice lowercase letters along with uppercase letters
  • Use the recording pages to cross off guesses and write correct letters
  • Let children take turns hiding the peanut butter and jelly

For an Extra Challenge

  • Increase the number of alphabet cards up to the full alphabet
  • Include similar letters such as b and d together
  • Mix uppercase and lowercase cards in the same round
  • Ask children to name a word that starts with the letter they guess

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Choose specific letters of focus for each child's goals
  • Use a short language frame such as "Is the jelly behind ___?"
  • Have children point to a letter to guess when naming is still emerging
  • Use the black and white cards to reduce visual clutter
  • Give extra processing time before each guess
