Why Teachers Love It

  • Science through movement: Children act out each stage of the butterfly life cycle, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.
  • Helps kids reset: A quick roll and a burst of movement help children calm their bodies and refocus.
  • Two cube options: Slide the inserts into a soft photo cube or build the budget-friendly paper cube.
  • Printer-friendly: Color and black and white versions give you options for any printer.
  • Sub plans made simple: It is low-prep and easy to toss into your emergency sub folder.
  • Great for therapy too: Occupational and physical therapists can target balance, core strength, motor planning and following directions in a playful, non-intimidating way.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Gross motor coordination: Curling, crawling, stretching and flying motions build body control, coordination and balance.
  • Listening and following directions: Children hear a one-step direction, understand it and carry it out with their bodies.
  • Life cycle concepts: Pretend play helps children understand the order of the butterfly life cycle.
  • Movement vocabulary: Words like egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, crawl and fly build language through movement.
  • Self-regulation: A short, structured movement break gives sensory input and helps children calm down and re-engage.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Following directions
  • Listening to classmates
  • Maintaining attention
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print your preferred version: color or black and white inserts for a soft cube, or the DIY template.

Step 2: Prep the cube. Slide the inserts into a differentiated instruction cube, or fold and tape your DIY cube.

Step 3: Roll the cube and perform the action shown. Curl, crawl, stretch or fly, just like a butterfly! Use it during morning meeting, between learning centers or as a quick energizer after lunch.

Materials You'll Need

  • A differentiated instruction cube (soft or photo cube) or the included cube template
  • Tape (for the cube template)

Easy Differentiation

Children come to movement time with different energy levels, motor skills and language needs. This butterfly cube is easy to adjust for each of them.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Model each movement before children try it
  • Name the picture aloud and act it out together
  • Start with movements children already know, like flying like a butterfly
  • Offer a calmer version of an action, such as crawling slowly like a caterpillar

For On-Level Practice

  • Let children take turns rolling the cube for the group
  • Act out each movement as the class counts together
  • Use the cube during transitions throughout the day
  • Pair it with a butterfly, insect or spring unit

For an Extra Challenge

  • Let a child lead the group by naming the movement and showing it
  • Act out the life cycle stages in order, from egg to butterfly
  • Ask children to move fast and then slow
  • Have children tell which stage of the life cycle they are acting out

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice life cycle words such as egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly
  • Use a simple sentence frame such as "I can ___ like a ___."
  • Use the cube in OT or PT sessions targeting balance, core strength and motor planning
  • Show the picture while saying the action word for visual support
  • Add it to calm-down or reset routines

Perfect For

  • Morning meetings and circle time transitions
  • Sensory breaks
  • Indoor recess
  • Gross motor learning centers
  • Calm-down or reset routines
  • OT and PT sessions
  • Substitute plans
  • Butterfly and life cycle units
  • Homeschool and after-school wiggle time
