Shape recognition: Children identify and name 2D shapes in clip cards, matching games and puzzles.
-
Shape attributes: Sorting by number of sides and curved or not curved builds geometry vocabulary.
-
Building shapes: Popsicle sticks, geoboards and sticks and play dough let children create each shape.
-
Sorting and classifying: Children sort shapes and real objects into groups such as "Square/Not Square."
-
Graphing: Children roll the shape dice and record results on a graph.
-
Patterns: The differentiated pattern pack gives practice copying and extending shape patterns.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the activities you want to use. To save on laminating, use a write and wipe pocket for the play dough mats, graphing and roll and make activities.
Step 2: Introduce one or two shapes at a time in a small group, then set out the matching centers, such as the Build It! shapes, clip cards and sorting mats.
Step 3: Rotate in the games, puzzles and Trace, Write, Draw the Room as children grow more confident. Use dry erase markers or crayons to trace the shape words at the bottom of the play dough mats.
Materials You'll Need
- Write and wipe pockets or a laminator
- Dry erase markers or crayons
- Play dough
- Popsicle sticks
- Geoboards
Easy Differentiation
Every child is at a different place with shapes. With so many activities in one pack, it is easy to meet each child right where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the shape-to-shape puzzles and matching games
- Focus on one shape at a time with the "Square/Not Square" style sorting mats
- Trace each shape with a finger before building it with play dough
- Count the sides of each shape together
For On-Level Practice
- Use the clip cards and Spin and Cover games in math centers
- Build each shape with popsicle sticks or a geoboard
- Play the 2D Shape Board Game with a partner
For an Extra Challenge
- Sort the large sorting set by number of sides and by curved/not curved
- Use the shape-to-word puzzles and write the shape names
- Hunt for real objects in Trace, Write, Draw the Room
- Choose a harder level from the differentiated pattern pack
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice shape names with a sentence frame such as "This is a ___."
- Use play dough and geoboards to build hand strength and control
