Why Teachers Love It
-
A game students already know: Most students know how to play War, so they can jump right into practicing facts.
-
Targeted fact practice: Choose a single set to focus on one group of facts or a mixed set for review.
-
Lots of practice in a short time: Every flip asks students to solve and compare, so fluency grows quickly.
-
Works across grade levels: Use the cards for first fact practice or for review with older students who need more fluency.
-
Low prep and reusable: Laminate the cards or back them with scrapbook paper for extra durability.
-
A go-to for early finishers: Once students learn the game, they can play independently with a partner.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Division fact fluency: Students build speed and accuracy as they solve division facts from 1-12.
-
Comparing quotients: Students decide which quotient is greater, practicing greater than and less than.
-
Math vocabulary: Words such as quotient, divide and compare become part of the game.
-
Mental math: Students solve facts quickly in their heads to keep up with each round.
-
Fact families: Practicing one set at a time helps students see the connection between multiplication and division.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Using mathematical language
- Communicating choices
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print two copies of each division facts set for best results. Laminate the cards for long-term use or back them with scrapbook paper, then store each set with its deck label and instruction card.
Step 2: Split the deck evenly between two players, who keep their cards in a face-down stack. Both players flip over one card at the same time and compare the quotients. The player with the higher quotient wins the round and collects both cards.
Step 3: If the quotients are the same, it's War! Each player lays down three cards face down and flips a fourth. The highest quotient wins all the cards in the round. Keep playing until one player runs out of cards or time is up. The player with the most cards wins.
Easy Differentiation
Students learn their division facts at different speeds. These ideas make it easy to give each student the right level of practice.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with a single fact set before using the mixed sets
- Let students use a multiplication chart to check each round
- Have students say each division fact aloud before comparing
- Play in teams so partners can talk through each fact
For On-Level Practice
- Use the sets that match the facts your class is working on now
- Have students state each comparison aloud, such as "81 ÷ 9 is greater than 6"
- Rotate a new fact set through centers each week
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the three mixed sets
- Ask students to write the related multiplication fact for each card
- Have students record each comparison with the >, < or = symbol
- Time a round and challenge students to beat their own score
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice math vocabulary such as divide, quotient, greater than and less than
- Use a sentence frame such as "My quotient is ___."
- Reduce the deck size for shorter games
- Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play
Perfect For
- Math centers
- Partner games
- Small groups and RTI
- Early finishers
- Fact fluency practice
- Upper grade review
- Substitute plans
- Homeschool
