-
Comparing numbers: Students use greater than, less than and equal to as they decide which number is larger each round.
-
Reading standard and word form: Matching numerals to number words builds fluency with number names. (Standard form is the number written with digits, like 6,890,700.)
-
Ordering multi-digit numbers: Students mentally sequence numbers as they play.
-
Mental math: Students compare and estimate without needing manipulatives or paper.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the decks, cut the cards apart and store each deck with its matching label. Split a full deck evenly between two players, who keep their cards face down.
Step 2: Each player flips their top card at the same time and compares to see which number is greater. The player with the higher number takes both cards and adds them to the bottom of their pile.
Step 3: Have a tie? It's WAR! Each player lays down three face-down cards, then flips a fourth. The highest number wins the battle. Continue until time runs out or one player collects all the cards!
Easy Differentiation
Students come to large numbers with different levels of place value understanding. These ideas help every student play the same game at the right level.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the decks that use numbers in the thousands
- Keep a place value chart nearby so students can line up the digits
- Have students read each number aloud before comparing
- Play in teams so partners can talk through each comparison
For On-Level Practice
- Use the decks that match the place values your class is working on now
- Have students state each comparison aloud, such as "6,890,700 is greater than 4,306,113"
- Mix numeral and word form cards in one game
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the decks with numbers in the millions
- Ask students to record each comparison with the >, < or = symbol
- Have students explain which digit decided the winner of each round
- Challenge students to put a handful of cards in order from least to greatest
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice number words and math vocabulary such as thousands, millions, greater than and less than
- Use a sentence frame such as "___ is greater than ___ because ___."
- Reduce the deck size for shorter games
- Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play
Perfect For
- Math centers for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade
- Partner games
- Small group instruction and guided math
- Morning tubs and early finishers
