-
A clear path for every child: Copy, continue and create cards (with and without guidance) build pattern skills one step at a time.
-
Same activities at every level: Each pattern set has the same types of activities, so children know what to do as they move up.
-
Games kids love: The pattern board game and grid games make pattern practice feel like play.
-
Easy to print: Every activity comes in color and black and white.

How to Use It
Step 1: Choose the pattern set that fits each group, starting with AB. Print the activities in color or black and white, laminate for durability and cut apart the cards.
Step 2: Introduce the pattern with the pattern pictures and the "I can copy" prompts. Model how to copy and continue the pattern in a small group.
Step 3: Set the clip cards, sorting cards, board game and grid games out in your math centers. Move children from the copy prompts to the continue cards and then the create cards, adding new pattern sets as they are ready.
Easy Differentiation
Kindergarteners come to patterns with very different skills. These activities are easy to adjust for each child.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the AB pattern set
- Use the "I can copy" prompts before moving to continue cards
- Say the pattern aloud together before adding the next piece
- Use the create cards with guidance
For On-Level Practice
- Use the continue cards with the AAB, ABB and AABB sets
- Play the pattern board game with a partner
- Complete the pattern clip cards in math centers
- Ask children to tell what comes next and why
For an Extra Challenge
- Move to the ABC, ABCD and ABAC pattern sets
- Use the create cards without guidance
- Sort the pattern sorting cards from more than one pattern set at a time
- Have children make a pattern for a partner to continue
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice position words such as next, after and repeat
- Use a simple sentence frame such as "Next comes ___"
- Let children point to or place the next piece when speaking is hard
- Offer fewer cards at a time to reduce visual clutter
- Give extra processing time and model each pattern first
