Spring counting mats for 1-20 that make number practice feel like a rainy spring day! Practice numbers 1-20 with these low-prep Spring Number Mats as children build number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, fine motor skills and pre-writing skills in one fun spring counting activity.

Use these Spring Number Mats with play dough, Wikki Stix, buttons, pom poms, mini erasers and more! Children build each number, fill the ten-frames (grids of ten boxes that help children see and count numbers) and trace the numbers on the lines. With 3 differentiated levels, these number mats are perfect math centers for your preschool, pre-K or prekinders classroom.

With these spring counting mats, you get

  • Number mats for 1-20 with filled ten-frames
  • Number mats for 1-20 with empty ten-frames
  • Spring counting cards for 1-20 without ten-frames
  • Black and white versions of each set for easy printing
  • Three levels children can progress through all spring

Print, laminate and let the spring counting begin!

What's Included

The spring counting number mats come in three different variations. Each variation includes the numbers from one to twenty.

  • Number mats with filled ten-frames
  • Number mats with empty ten-frames
  • Spring counting cards without ten-frames
  • Each set is also included in black and white for easy printing

Why Teachers Love It

  • Three levels in one set: Filled ten-frames, empty ten-frames and plain counting cards make it easy to meet every child where they are.
  • Use what you have: Play dough, Wikki Stix, buttons, pom poms, mini erasers and glass gems all work on the mats.
  • Low prep: Print, laminate or slip the mats into write and wipe pockets.
  • Printer-friendly: Every set comes in color and black and white.
  • Engaging all season: Children can progress through the levels, or you can offer all three sets to keep them engaged in number work all spring.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Number recognition: Children identify numbers 1-20 on each mat.
  • One-to-one correspondence: Filling the ten-frame and the counting box with the correct number of objects connects each number to an amount.
  • Counting to 20: Children count out objects and "raindrops" for each number.
  • Pre-writing and number writing: Children trace the numbers and number words with a dry erase marker or crayon.
  • Fine motor skills: Rolling play dough and placing small objects build hand strength and control.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Maintaining attention
  • Using mathematical language
  • Building confidence

How to Use It

Step 1: Print and laminate the mats, or save on laminating with a write and wipe pocket. Save on colored ink by printing the black and white Spring Number Mats or use the black and white mats for individual practice.

Step 2: Use play dough to create the number on the spring counting mats. You can also have the kids fill the numbers in using small objects such as mini erasers or glass gems. Another option is to use a dry erase marker. You can also use a dry erase marker to trace the numbers on the lines.

Step 3: Fill the ten-frame and the counting box with the correct number of objects. Use dry erase markers or crayons to trace the number words at the bottom of sets 1 and 2.

Raindrop Counting Mats

Using small blue objects such as pom poms or glass vase filler, show the correct number of "raindrops" above each umbrella.

Materials You'll Need

  • Play dough, Wikki Stix, buttons, pom poms, mini erasers or glass gems
  • Small blue objects such as pom poms or glass vase filler for the raindrops
  • Dry erase markers or crayons
  • Write and wipe pockets (or laminating supplies)

Easy Differentiation

Young learners come to counting with very different levels of confidence. The three levels make it simple to give each child the right amount of support.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with the number mats with filled ten-frames
  • Begin with numbers 1-10 before moving to 11-20
  • Count together while touching each object
  • Use large counters such as pom poms

For On-Level Practice

  • Use the number mats with empty ten-frames
  • Build each number with play dough and trace the number word
  • Show the raindrops above each umbrella with small blue objects

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the spring counting cards without ten-frames
  • Work with numbers 11-20
  • Tell how many more objects are needed to fill the ten-frame
  • Show the same number two ways, with objects and with a written numeral

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use play dough and small objects to build fine motor skills
  • Say each number aloud while placing objects
  • Use the black and white mats to reduce visual clutter
  • Give extra processing time and model each step first

Perfect For

  • Spring math centers
  • Rainy day and weather units
  • Small groups
  • Morning tubs
  • Individual practice
  • Intervention
  • Homeschool preschool

Standards

These spring counting mats support the 2022 Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and Virginia's Early Learning and Development Standards (2021), and they build toward kindergarten math standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS K.CC.A.3: Write numbers 0-20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
  • CCSS K.CC.B.4.a: Say number names in order while pairing each object with one number.
  • CCSS K.CC.B.5: Count out that many objects when given a number from 1-20.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines

  • Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.A.2: Count up to 10 objects, touching one object for each number, as children fill the ten-frames.
  • Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.A.5: Recognize numerals 0-10 on the number mats.

Texas TEKS

  • TEKS Math K.2.B: Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures.

Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards

  • Virginia ELDS CD3.1: Compare numbers, count and recognize quantities with ten-frames and counting mats.

Virginia SOL

  • VA SOL Math K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set.
  • VA SOL Math K.NS.1.c: Represent forward counting by ones with tools such as ten-frames.
  • VA SOL Math K.NS.2.b: Build a set of objects that matches a given numeral, such as showing 12 objects on a number mat.

Add the Spring Counting Mats for 1-20 to your cart and have three levels of hands-on counting practice ready for spring. Grab the play dough and pom poms and watch your learners count all the way to 20!
