Life-size ten-frame and number bonds practice that gets your whole class up and moving! This flower themed set lets children build number bonds from 0-20 on a giant ten-frame you tape right on your floor or wall.
A ten-frame is a simple grid of two rows with five boxes in each row, and a number bond is a diagram that shows how two parts join to make a whole. Children draw a number bond card, then build it on the life-size ten-frame with two different colors of flowers. Seeing both parts of the number laid out in front of them helps students understand how number bonds and fact families work. They can work with partners or in small groups to find sums and missing addends (the missing part of an addition fact).
With this life-size ten-frame and number bonds activity, you get
- A whole-body math activity for your entire class
- Number bond practice from 0-20 on a single or double ten-frame
- Missing addend and missing sum cards for two levels of thinking
- A smaller ten-frame and flower set for follow-up practice in math centers
- Assessment sheets to check what children learned
Grab some removable tape and let the flower building begin!
What's Included
- Flowers to print on two different colors of paper for the life-size ten-frame
- Number bond cards with missing addends
- Number bond cards with missing sums
- A smaller ten-frame for math centers

Why Teachers Love It
-
Kids get up and move: Building number bonds on a floor or wall ten-frame adds movement to math time.
-
Whole class or small group: Use the life-size ten-frame with everyone at once or with a small group of learners.
-
Makes number bonds visible: Two colors of flowers show both parts of a number at a glance.
-
Two card types: Missing addend and missing sum cards let you choose the right challenge.
-
Ready for centers: The smaller ten-frame and flowers carry the same practice into your math centers.
-
Built-in follow-up: Assessment sheets show you which children are ready to move on.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Number bonds: Children show how two parts make a whole for numbers from 0-20.
-
Finding missing addends: Children work out the missing part when they know the whole and one part.
-
Finding sums: Children join two parts to find the whole.
-
Ten-frame understanding: Filling the frame helps children see numbers in relation to 10.
-
Fact families: Building the same number bond with two colors shows how related facts fit together.
-
Counting and one-to-one correspondence: Children place one flower in each box as they count.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Listening to classmates
- Following directions
- Communicating choices
- Using mathematical language
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Use removable tape to make a ten-frame (or a double ten-frame for numbers to 20) on your floor or wall. Print the flowers on two different colors of paper.
Step 2: A student draws a number bond card out of a box. Working with a partner or small group, children build the number bond on the life-size ten-frame with the two colors of flowers and find the missing addend or the sum.
Step 3: For more practice, put the number bond cards, the smaller ten-frame and the flower set in a math center. After the whole class or small group activity, follow up with the number bond and ten-frame assessment sheets.
Materials You'll Need
- Removable tape
- Paper in two different colors
- A box to draw the number bond cards from
Easy Differentiation
Every class has children who are just starting with number bonds and children who are ready for more. This life-size activity is easy to adjust for each group.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with a single ten-frame and numbers to 10
- Use the missing sum cards first, so children count all of the flowers
- Build each number bond together before children try one on their own
- Count each flower out loud as it is placed
For On-Level Practice
- Mix missing sum and missing addend cards
- Have partners take turns building and checking each number bond
- Practice with the smaller ten-frame in a math center
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the double ten-frame for number bonds to 20
- Focus on the missing addend cards
- Ask children to say every fact in the fact family for the number bond they built
- Have children write the addition sentence that matches their number bond
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice math words such as part, whole, more and how many
- Use a sentence frame such as "___ and ___ make ___."
- Place the life-size ten-frame on the floor or wall, whichever is easier for a child to reach
- Reduce the number range and give extra processing time
Perfect For
- Whole class math lessons
- Small groups
- Partner practice
- Math centers
- Intervention
- Indoor recess with a math focus
- Spring and flower themes
- Homeschool
Standards
This life-size ten-frame and number bonds activity supports kindergarten and 1st grade standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):
Common Core State Standards
-
CCSS K.OA.A.3: Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, such as 6 flowers shown as 4 and 2 or 5 and 1.
-
CCSS K.OA.A.4: For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to it.
-
CCSS K.NBT.A.1: Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, as on the double ten-frame.
-
CCSS 1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20 using strategies such as making ten.
-
CCSS 1.OA.D.8: Find the unknown number in an addition or subtraction equation, as on the missing addend cards.
Texas TEKS
-
TEKS Math K.2.I: Compose and decompose numbers up to 10 with objects and pictures.
-
TEKS Math 1.3.C: Compose 10 with two or more addends.
-
