How to Use It
Step 1: Choose the time to the hour activities you want for the week. Print them in color or black and white, laminate the mats and cards for durability and cut apart the cards and puzzles.
Step 2: Introduce telling time with the pocket chart sorting sets or the play dough clock mat. Model how to read the hour on an analog clock and a digital clock.
Step 3: Set the games, puzzles and clip cards out in your math centers. Play time to the hour BINGO with the whole class and rotate in new activities to keep the practice fresh.
Easy Differentiation
Children come to telling time with very different skills. These activities are easy to adjust for each child.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with analog clocks only before adding digital times
- Use the play dough clock mat to build a clock together
- Offer fewer cards in the matching games and puzzles
- Say each time aloud together before matching
For On-Level Practice
- Use the activities as written in math centers
- Play the telling time board game or a Spin & Cover game with a partner
- Match analog clocks, digital clocks and written times in the link up
- Write the time on the "Write the Time" cards
For an Extra Challenge
- Write the time on the dry erase digital watch mat without a model
- Compare the graphs and tell which time has more and which has fewer
- Have children show a time on the play dough clock mat for a partner to read
- Connect each hour to a part of the school day
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use a simple sentence frame such as "It is 3 o'clock"
- Practice time words such as hour, clock, hand and o'clock
- Build fine motor skills with clip cards, play dough and dry erase markers
- Let children point to or place the matching card when speaking is hard
- Give extra processing time and model each activity first

-
TEKS Math 1.7.E: Tell time to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks.
-
TEKS Math K.8.B: Use data to create real-object and picture graphs.
-
