How to Use It

Step 1: Print the activities you want and laminate them for durability. Cut apart the clip cards, matching game cards and sorting pictures.

Step 2: Model each activity in a small group. Show children how to clip the matching color, sort pictures onto the mats or fill a mitten with the matching color of play dough.

Step 3: Set the activities out in your winter learning centers. Select the colors you want for the winter hat mini book, then have children color the hats to match the words on each page and trace the color words.

Easy Differentiation

Preschoolers come to color learning with very different skills. This set makes it simple to give each child the right amount of support or challenge.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Begin with a few colors at a time, such as the primary colors sorting mats
  • Use a small number of cards in the matching game
  • Name each color together before children clip or sort
  • Make the clip cards self-checking with a colored dot on the back of each correct answer

For On-Level Practice

  • Rotate through the clip cards, spin and cover games and sorting mats during centers
  • Have children fill each mitten with the matching color of play dough and name the color
  • Read the winter hat mini book together after children color and trace it
  • Add the secondary colors sorting mats once primary colors feel easy

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the second sorting mat without color prompting
  • Add more cards to the matching game
  • Choose less familiar colors, such as gray and light blue, for the mini book
  • Ask children to read the color words on the play dough mats on their own

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice color words with a short sentence frame such as "This mitten is ___."
  • Use the play dough mats for children building hand strength
  • Offer the clip cards for pinch and grasp practice with clothespins
  • Point to the matching color for children who are not yet saying color words
  • Give extra processing time and model each step before children begin
