Why Teachers Love It
-
A game students already know: Most students know how to play War, so they can jump right into practicing facts.
-
Targeted fact practice: Choose a single deck to focus on one fact family or a mixed deck for review.
-
Lots of practice in a short time: Every flip asks students to multiply and compare, so fluency grows quickly.
-
Color-coded and organized: Color-coded decks and deck covers make setup and cleanup quick.
-
Works across grade levels: Use the cards for first fact practice in 3rd grade or for spiral review with older students.
-
Easy for sub plans: The game is simple to explain, so a substitute can set it up with no reteaching.
Skills Students Practice

-
Math vocabulary: Words such as factor, product and compare become part of the game.
-
Fact families: Practicing one deck at a time helps students see patterns in each times table.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the decks you want to use, then store each set with its deck cover and instruction card. Split the deck evenly between two players. Each player places their cards in a face-down stack.
Step 2: Both players turn over the top card. The player with the higher product or correct solution wins both cards and adds them to the bottom of their pile.
Step 3: Tied cards? Battle time! If both cards have the same value, each player lays down three cards face down and a fourth card face up. The higher value wins all the cards. The game continues until one player runs out of cards or time is up. The player with the most cards wins!
Easy Differentiation
Students learn their multiplication facts at different speeds. These ideas make it easy to give each student the right level of practice.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with a single fact family deck, such as the twos or tens
- Let students use a multiplication chart to check each round
- Have students say each multiplication fact aloud before comparing
- Play in teams so partners can talk through each fact
For On-Level Practice
- Use the decks that match the facts your class is working on now
- Have students state each comparison aloud, such as "9 × 5 is greater than 35"
- Rotate a new fact family deck through centers each week
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the 3 bonus mixed fact decks
- Ask students to write the related division fact for each card
- Have students record each comparison with the >, < or = symbol
- Time a round and challenge students to beat their own score
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice math vocabulary such as multiply, product, greater than and less than
- Use a sentence frame such as "My product is ___."
- Reduce the deck size for shorter games
- Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play
