CVC word family clip cards that build phonics confidence, fluency and fine motor skills all at once! These interactive clip cards are a perfect addition to your literacy centers, small groups or independent work stations. CVC words are short consonant-vowel-consonant words like rug and tug.

With 120 short vowel words and three levels of support, you can easily differentiate for every learner in your classroom. Whether your kids are just starting to hear middle vowel sounds or are ready to tackle word families and rimes (the vowel and ending sounds a word family shares, like -ug), this hands-on activity makes phonics practice playful. Plus, that clothespin grip? Hello, fine motor bonus!

With these CVC word clip cards, you get

  • 120 CVC word clip cards with clipart on every card
  • 3 differentiated levels: full word, missing middle vowel and missing rime
  • Color and ink-saving black-and-white versions of all three levels
  • Three answer choices on each card for children to clip
  • Teacher tips for making the cards self-checking

Print, laminate, grab some clothespins and start clipping!

  • 120 CVC word clip cards (color and black/white versions)
  • Word-supported clip cards (with the full CVC word)
  • Medial vowel clip cards (with the missing middle vowel only)
  • Rime clip cards (with the missing end chunk or rime)

Why Teachers Love It

  • Three levels in one set: Move children from full-word cards to missing vowels to missing rimes as their skills grow.
  • Easy to differentiate: 120 words and three levels of support let you match the cards to every learner.
  • Built-in fine motor practice: Pinching clothespins strengthens the hand muscles needed for writing.
  • Self-checking option: A small dot on the back of each correct answer lets children check their own work.
  • Independent and focused: Teachers share that children stay focused and find the cards self-explanatory.
  • Grab-and-go all year: The three-level structure makes this a resource you will use over and over again.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Phonemic awareness and phonics: Children isolate and identify medial short vowel sounds and decode complete CVC words.
  • Sound-letter correspondence: Children decide which vowel or rime belongs in each word.
  • Word families: Rime cards focus on word endings and spelling patterns.
  • Visual discrimination: Children examine and compare the three choices to find the correct match.
  • Reading fluency: Repeated exposure to word families helps children read and recognize words more automatically.
  • Fine motor development: Pinching and clipping clothespins builds hand strength.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Working independently
  • Making and checking predictions
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose a set of clip cards that fits each learner's level and provide clothespins or mini clothespins for pinching and clipping. For self-checking cards, add a small dot on the back of each correct answer.

Step 2: Children look at the picture, say the word and choose the correct vowel or rime from the three answer choices.

Step 3: Children clip the correct answer with a clothespin, then flip the card to check their work if you added the self-checking dots.

Materials You'll Need

  • Clothespins or mini clothespins

Easy Differentiation

Children in the same class can be at very different points with short vowels. The three levels make it easy to give each child the right amount of support.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Use the word-supported cards to introduce CVC word decoding with strong visual clues
  • Say each picture name together and stretch out the sounds
  • Start with a small stack of cards from one word family
  • Use mini or regular clothespins, whichever is easier to pinch

For On-Level Practice

  • Move to the medial vowel cards as children begin hearing vowel sounds independently
  • Add the self-checking dots so children can check their own answers
  • Place the cards in literacy centers or morning tubs
  • Have partners take turns reading their answers out loud

For an Extra Challenge

  • Introduce the rime cards for kids ready to focus on word endings and spelling patterns
  • Mix cards from all three levels in one set
  • Ask children to read the whole word after clipping
  • Have children name another word in the same word family

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use the clipart to support vocabulary for ELL and ESL learners
  • Practice target sounds as children say each picture name during speech-language therapy
  • Use clothespin clipping to build hand strength during OT sessions
  • Offer the word-supported cards in special education or resource rooms
  • Give extra processing time before children choose an answer

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers
  • Small groups
  • Independent work stations
  • Morning tubs
  • Preschool and kindergarten classrooms
  • Homeschool literacy lessons
  • Special education and resource rooms
  • ESL and ELL support
  • Speech-language therapy sessions
  • Sub plans and early finisher baskets
