CVC word family puzzles give early readers a hands-on way to blend, spell and read short vowel words! These CVC Word Family Puzzles include over 150 CVC words, and each puzzle breaks into three interlocking pieces for the beginning, middle and ending sound. CVC words are three-letter words that follow a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, such as cat, dog and hut.
Children look at the picture, say each sound out loud and snap the three letter pieces together to build the word. Two levels let you start with word support and move to picture-only puzzles when children are ready. It feels like play, and every puzzle is real phonics practice.
With these CVC word puzzles, you get

- Two levels: Level 1 with word support and Level 2 with pictures only

Why Teachers Love It
-
Two levels in one set: Word-supported puzzles help beginners, while picture-only puzzles ask children to work out the spelling on their own.
-
Every sound gets its own piece: Splitting each word into beginning, middle and ending sounds makes blending and segmenting easy to see and touch.
-
Easy to differentiate: Offer a single word family, a few puzzles with the same vowel or mix word families for more challenge.
-
Built for independence: The self-checking tip lets children check their own work during centers.
-
Print the way you like: Full-color and black-and-white versions fit any printer and budget.
-
Hands-on phonics: Fitting puzzle pieces together adds fine motor practice to every word.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Blending and segmenting: Children say each sound in a CVC word and blend the sounds to read it.
-
Short vowel recognition: Puzzles are organized by short vowel sound (a, e, i, o and u).
-
Phonemic awareness: Children isolate the beginning, middle and ending sounds in each word.
-
Letter-sound correspondence: Children match each sound to the letter that spells it.
-
Spelling and word building: Picture-only puzzles ask children to build the word from the sounds they hear.
-
Word families: Working through one word family at a time shows how changing the first letter makes a new word.
-
Reading fluency: Repeated practice helps children read CVC words more quickly.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills

How to Use It
Step 1: Choose the level and word family you want to work on. Print, laminate if you like and cut apart the puzzle pieces. For added independence, place matching colored dots or shapes on the back of each puzzle set so children can check their work.
Step 2: Children select a puzzle and look at the picture (Level 2) or the picture and word (Level 1). They say the sounds in the word out loud.
Step 3: Children match the three letter pieces to build the correct word, then read the whole word aloud.
Teacher Tip: Do not provide all of the puzzles at once. Focus on a single word family, choose a few puzzles with the same middle vowel or even work with one puzzle so children can focus on each individual sound.
Easy Differentiation
Every reader is at a different point with blending and spelling. These puzzles are easy to adjust so each child gets the right amount of challenge.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with Level 1 puzzles that show the word
- Offer only a few puzzles from one word family
- Say each sound together while touching each puzzle piece
- Use the self-checking dots or shapes so children can confirm a match
For On-Level Practice
- Work through one word family or short vowel at a time
- Have children read each finished word aloud
- Use the puzzles as an independent literacy center
- Mix Level 1 and Level 2 puzzles from the same word family
For an Extra Challenge
- Move to Level 2 picture-only puzzles
- Mix word families and short vowels in one set
- Ask children to write each word after building it
- Challenge children to change one letter piece to make a new word
