  • Made for speech therapy: Naming each picture gives repeated practice with the /j/ sound and supports articulation goals.
  • Great for ELL vocabulary: Visual supports make learning English words with the letter sound J easier and more engaging.
  • Flexible play: Play independently, competitively or cooperatively in classrooms, homeschool routines, ELL support or OT sessions.
  • Low prep: Print, laminate, cut and play.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Letter sound J recognition: Children identify and practice the /j/ sound, connecting spoken sounds to printed words.
  • Phonemic awareness and articulation: Children isolate and pronounce the /j/ sound, which supports speech therapy objectives. (Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and work with the separate sounds in spoken words.)
  • Visual discrimination and scanning: Children strengthen attention to detail by quickly locating the matching J picture on the busy I Spy boards.
  • Vocabulary and early literacy: A wide variety of J words, such as jersey, jigsaw and jukebox, expands oral language and early reading confidence.
  • Expressive language: Children label, describe and use J words in context.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and tokens. Laminate for long-term use, then cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Choose an I Spy board with J sound pictures and place it in the center.

Step 3: Each player flips a card featuring a letter sound J word and players race to spot the correct J image on the board. The first player to identify the picture earns a star token. Continue until all J sound cards are matched. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Students can flip through the letter sound J cards on their own, covering matches with tokens or mini erasers to build focus and practice phonics skills without competition.

Materials You'll Need

  • Tokens or mini erasers to cover matches (for independent play)

Easy Differentiation

Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Name each picture together and stress the /j/ sound before playing
  • Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
  • Start with familiar pictures, such as jam, jet and juice
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with a small group
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the 10 different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
  • Name another word with the /j/ sound for each picture found
  • Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice the /j/ sound through playful repetition during articulation sessions
  • Build coordination in OT as children handle cards and tokens
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a jellyfish."
  • Build vocabulary with strong visual cues and repeated practice
  • Use independent play for students who do better without competition
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed
