How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game boards, image cards and star tokens on cardstock, or on the back of patterned scrapbook paper to prevent peeking. Laminate for long-lasting classroom use, then cut apart the pieces.
Step 2: Choose one of the letter Z game boards and place it in the center of the table so all players can see. Deal the image cards face down so each player has a small stack.
Step 3: On each turn, all players flip one card at the same time and race to spy the matching picture on the board. The first player to find the correct match wins a star token for that round. Continue until all the cards have been played. The player with the most tokens at the end of the game is the winner.
Materials You'll Need
- Cardstock or patterned scrapbook paper
- Laminating supplies
- Mini erasers, math counters or bingo chips (optional, in place of star tokens)
- A photo box or zip-top bag for storage
Independent Work
Give one student a board and the full stack of image cards. They flip each card, find the Z word and cover it with a mini eraser or token.
Parallel Play
Two learners play side by side with separate boards and cards, taking turns at their own pace.
Easy Differentiation
Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Name each picture together and stress the /z/ sound before playing
- Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
- Start with simple words such as zoo, zap and zebra
- Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written with a small group
- Say each picture name aloud when you find it
- Rotate through the 10 different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
- Add the harder cards, such as magazine, drizzle and horizon
- Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
- Sort the cards by where the /z/ sound falls: beginning, middle or end
- Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Target articulation goals for letter Z words while keeping sessions fun
- Practice fine motor skills in occupational therapy by pointing to pictures and placing tokens
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a zebra."
- Build vocabulary with strong visual cues and repeated practice in a low-stress setting
- Use parallel play for students who do better without competition
- Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed
