How to Use It
Materials You'll Need
- A fly swatter (optional, hands work too!)
- Tape for hanging the vowel flies
Step 1: Tape the five vowel flies to the wall or lay them on the floor. For small spaces, individual work or quieter settings, set out the mini vowel fly desktop mat instead.
Step 2: A student picks a CVC picture card and says the word aloud. Using a fly swatter (or just their hand!), they swat the vowel fly that matches the middle sound in the word.
Step 3: Repeat with a new card. To extend the activity, let students sort the picture cards onto the correct vowel fly in a phonics center, then use the assessment pages to review vowel recognition through circling, tracing and writing.
Easy Differentiation
Some children are just starting to hear middle sounds while others are ready to spell whole words. These ideas help every child join the fun.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with two vowel flies, such as a and o
- Say the picture word slowly and stretch the middle sound
- Have the child repeat the word before swatting
- Work with a small set of picture cards at a time
For On-Level Practice
- Use all five vowel flies
- Have the child name the vowel letter after swatting
- Sort the picture cards under each vowel fly in a center
For an Extra Challenge
- Have children spell the whole CVC word after swatting the vowel
- Complete the assessment pages independently
- Think of a new word with the same middle sound
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the picture cards for vocabulary and articulation practice
- Use the mini desktop mat for children who work best seated
- Use a sentence frame such as "Cat has the short a sound."
- Give extra processing time and model the first few words
Perfect For
- Literacy centers and guided reading groups
- RTI and intervention sessions
- Speech therapy and OT sessions
- ESL and ELL phonics practice
- Morning tubs or early finisher bins
- Rainy day movement breaks

★★★★★ Corrinne W. wrote, “This was an amazing resource. My kindergarten students loved the activity and were very engaged.”
★★★★★ Brittany B. wrote, “I used this activity as a whole group video lesson, and then the students completed the rest of it on their own. I had sent copies of this activity home with my kids in a learning packet. It was a great alternative activity to get them moving and not just staring at a screen during distance learning.”
