Why Teachers Love It

  • Science that kids ask for: The race to spy each animal first keeps every player watching the board.
  • Builds rainforest vocabulary: Naming creatures like sloths, toucans and anteaters gives children new words to learn and use.
  • Fits right into a habitat unit: Use it alongside lessons on habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • Great for RTI groups: Teachers use it as a vocabulary game to see which students grasp words and images quickly.
  • Low prep and reusable: Print, laminate and cut once, then use it year after year in centers, small groups or therapy sessions.
  • Flexible ways to play: Race as a group, match independently or play side by side on separate boards.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Rainforest animal vocabulary: Children build knowledge of creatures found in the Amazon region and other rainforest habitats.
  • Visual scanning and visual discrimination: Children strengthen focus and scanning skills as they quickly find matches on the busy rainforest boards.
  • Science connections: The game supports lessons on habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity by connecting real-world rainforest animals to engaging visuals.
  • Language development: Children build expressive and receptive vocabulary as they name, describe and talk about what they see.
  • Quick thinking and sustained attention: Because players race to find the picture first, they stay alert and engaged.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Listening to classmates
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the boards, image cards and tokens, laminate for durability and cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Choose a rainforest game board and place it in the center. Deal the image cards face down to each player. On each turn, all players flip their top card and race to find the matching rainforest animal on the board.

Step 3: The first player to spot the correct image wins a token card. Keep playing until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens at the end is the winner!

For independent play, a single student works through the deck of image cards on their own, flipping one card at a time, finding the matching picture on the game board and covering it with a mini eraser or token. For parallel play, two students each have their own I Spy game board and set of cards and play side by side at their own pace. This works well for children who need personal space, are just beginning to join group activities or thrive in a more relaxed, non-competitive setting.

Easy Differentiation

Children come to this game with very different vocabularies, visual skills and comfort levels with group play. It is easy to adjust so everyone can join in.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with independent play using one board and a few image cards
  • Name each animal together before the game begins
  • Begin with familiar animals such as monkeys, frogs and butterflies
  • Play side by side on separate boards before moving to a group race

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the race version as written with a small group
  • Name each animal out loud when you find it
  • Rotate through different game boards
  • Count tokens at the end to see who won

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the full set of 40 image cards
  • Describe each animal after you find it, such as its color or how it moves
  • Sort the cards into groups such as birds, reptiles and insects
  • Tell where in the rainforest the animal might live, such as in the trees or on the ground

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Reinforce rainforest vocabulary and target sounds as children name each animal
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
  • Build hand-eye coordination, attention and visual scanning during OT sessions
  • Have children point to or cover the picture when naming is still emerging
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

  • Rainforest and habitat units
  • Small groups and RTI
  • Speech therapy sessions
  • Occupational therapy sessions
  • ELL/ESL vocabulary practice
  • Substitute plans and indoor recess
