How to Use It
Step 1: Print and laminate the game boards, image cards and tokens, then cut apart the pieces.
Step 2: Choose one science lab-themed I Spy board and place it in the center. Deal the science tool cards face down to each player.
Step 3: On each turn, players flip their top card and race to “spy” the matching picture on the board. The first to spot it earns a token! Keep flipping until all cards are matched. The student with the most tokens wins!
Independent Play
Give one student a board and the full deck of cards. They flip, scan and cover each match using tokens, mini erasers or manipulatives for quiet skill practice.
Teacher Tip
Swap the tokens for seasonal mini erasers or colorful buttons. Kids get excited about the novelty, and you'll sneak in extra fine motor practice without changing the game.
Easy Differentiation
Every group of players brings different visual skills, language needs and attention spans. These play options make the game easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Name each science tool together before playing
- Play with one board and a small stack of image cards
- Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace
- Let children point to the picture if naming it is hard
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written with a small group
- Say each science word aloud when you find the picture
- Rotate through the 10 different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
- Sort the picture cards into groups, such as tools for looking closely and tools for measuring
- Tell what each tool helps a scientist do
- Use each science word in a sentence
- Describe a picture and have a partner find it on the board
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice saying science vocabulary out loud for articulation and labeling goals
- Target visual scanning, fine motor skills and attention to detail in occupational therapy
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a microscope."
- Connect new words to real-world objects with clear visuals and repeated play
- Use independent play for students who do better without competition
- Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed
