Addition fact family card game fun with a sunny beach theme! Build addition fact fluency with this "Slap-Jack" styled game, where students race to slap equivalent addition facts and sums for addition facts 1-10.

A fact family here means all of the addition facts that make the same sum. If a "5" is turned over in the center pile, players could slap a 5, 4+1, 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 5+0, 0+5 or any of those picture cards. Beach picture cards show groups of summer objects that children count to find each sum, so every player can join the race.

With this addition fact family card game, you get:

  • A fast-paced Slap-It game for addition facts 1-10
  • Three card formats: digits, number sentences and pictures
  • Beach counting pictures for children who need to see each fact
  • Easy ways to change the game by choosing which cards go in the center pile
  • Cards you can also use as flash cards or for a matching game

Print, cut and let the slapping begin!

What's Included

  • Digit cards
  • Numerical addition fact family cards (paired number sentences such as 1+0 and 0+1)
  • Picture addition fact family cards with groups of beach and summer objects to count
  • Instructions for the Slap-It card game for 2-4 players

Why Teachers Love It

  • Fact practice that feels like a game: Players watch every card closely, so addition review never drags.
  • Targets tricky formats: Choose any card format for the center pile so children get extra review on the part they struggle with most.
  • Easy to scaffold: Start with only two formats, such as digits and pictures, until children are ready for more.
  • Pictures support every learner: Children who are still counting can find each sum with the beach pictures.
  • More than one way to play: Use the cards for flash cards or a matching game too.
  • A matching cookie version: The same game comes in a cookie theme with identical content.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Addition fact fluency: Children quickly recognize addition facts 1-10.
  • Fact families: Children see that different facts, such as 2+3 and 4+1, can make the same sum.
  • Turn-around facts: Pairs such as 4+1 and 1+4 show that the order of the addends does not change the sum.
  • Adding zero: Facts such as 5+0 and 0+5 are part of the game.
  • Counting to add: Picture cards let children count beach objects to find each sum.
  • Number recognition: Digit cards help children connect each sum to its numeral.
  • Matching across formats: Children link a digit, a number sentence and a picture for the same amount.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Waiting during group play
  • Using mathematical language
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print and cut apart the cards. Choose one format of cards for the CENTER pile and use the other formats as PLAYING cards. More copies of the playing cards will create a longer game.

Step 2: Place the CENTER cards face down in a pile. Deal the PLAYING cards equally among 2-4 players and have each player place them face down in a pile in front of them. Decide who goes first and flip over one CENTER card.

Step 3: In clockwise order, players flip one card at a time. When a PLAYING card matches the CENTER card, players SLAP-IT! The first player to slap the card takes the center pile of played cards and adds them to the bottom of their own pile. Flip a new CENTER card and keep playing until time is up or one player has all the PLAYING cards.

Easy Differentiation

Children come to addition facts at very different levels. These variations make it simple to set up the game for each group.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with only two formats, such as the digits and pictures
  • Make more copies of the format you want to use for the playing cards
  • Let children count the objects on each picture card before they slap
  • Play with a smaller set of sums at first

For On-Level Practice

  • Play with all three formats
  • Put the digit cards in the center pile and use number sentences and pictures as playing cards
  • Have children say each fact aloud as they slap it
  • Use the cards as flash cards for quick review

For an Extra Challenge

  • Put the number sentence cards in the center pile
  • Play with only the number sentence and digit cards
  • Ask the player who slaps to name another fact that makes the same sum
  • Have children list every fact in the family for the center card

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use the picture and digit cards for a matching game at a slower pace
  • Use a short language frame such as "2 plus 3 is 5"
  • Have children point to or touch the match if slapping is hard
  • Play with two players and a small set of cards
  • Give extra processing time before each card is flipped

Perfect For

  • Math centers
  • Partner games
  • Small groups
  • Fact fluency practice
  • Intervention
  • Early finishers
  • Indoor recess
  • Homeschool
  • Substitute plans
