Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each cat first keeps every player watching the board.
  • Pet vocabulary kids care about: Children name cats, yarn, fish and mice, which builds expressive and receptive vocabulary.
  • Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the cards and you are ready to play.
  • Three ways to play: Use it as a group race, a calm independent activity or side-by-side parallel play.
  • Made for therapy and intervention: The picture-to-word matching makes it a natural fit for speech sessions, OT visual scanning practice, RTI groups and ELL support.
  • Works in every setting: Use it in classrooms, therapy sessions and homeschool with the same simple rules.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Vocabulary development: Children name and describe pet theme words like cat, yarn, fish and mouse.
  • Articulation: Kids practice clear speech as they say each word out loud during play.
  • Visual discrimination: Learners scan busy boards to spot small differences and find the exact cat that matches their card.
  • Attention and focus: High-interest cat scenes and the race to find a match keep learners engaged.
  • Problem solving: Students use scanning strategies to locate matches quickly.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the cat themed image cards, I Spy game boards and yarn token cards. Laminate for long-term use and cut the pieces apart.

Step 2: Choose a game board filled with cats and pet theme objects and place it in the center of the group. Deal image cards face down to each player or draw from a shared pile for group play.

Step 3: Everyone flips one card at the same time and races to spy the matching cat or pet object on the board. The first player to find it wins a token. Keep playing until all the cards have been used. The player with the most tokens wins!

Bonus Play Options

Independent play: Give one student an I Spy game board and the full stack of cat themed picture cards. They flip each card, find the picture and cover it with a mini eraser or token. This builds quiet focus, visual scanning and vocabulary and works well as a literacy center or early finisher activity.

Parallel play: Two players use separate I Spy game boards and flip and match their own cat themed picture cards side by side at their own pace. This works well for children who need personal space, are just beginning to join group activities or do best in a relaxed, non-competitive setting.

Easy Differentiation

Every group of players brings different visual skills, language needs and attention spans. These play options make the game easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with independent play and a small stack of image cards
  • Name each cat and pet item together before the game begins
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Cover each match with a mini eraser or token

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the race version as written with a partner or small group
  • Name each picture out loud when you find it
  • Rotate through different game boards
  • Count the tokens at the end to see who won

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the full deck of 40 image cards in one game
  • Tell what the cat on the card is doing, such as sleeping or reading, before collecting a token
  • Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "at the top" or "next to the fishbowl"
  • Find the picture before a short timer runs out

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice cat vocabulary and target sounds as children name each picture
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a cat with a ___."
  • Build visual scanning and fine motor control as children flip cards, place tokens and point to matches
  • Use parallel play for children who need personal space
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Pet theme and animal units
  • Literacy center warm-ups
  • RTI and small group interventions
  • Speech therapy articulation games
  • Occupational therapy visual scanning and fine motor practice
  • ELL and ESL vocabulary support
  • Homeschool learning and family game time
  • Early finishers
  • Sub tub plans and no-prep days
  • Rainy day fun and indoor recess
