Addition War card game practice with a friendly, familiar twist! Partners flip their cards at the same time, solve the addition facts and compare the sums. The greater sum wins the round.

This simple addition card game is played just like the classic card game "War," so children can start practicing right away. With 12 sets of cards covering addition facts from 1-10, plus a set of doubles only and a set of mixed facts, you can choose exactly the facts your students need. Two sets of worksheets using number lines and bar graphing give children even more ways to practice addition facts from 0-10.

With this Addition War card game, you get

  • 12 sets of addition fact cards to match the facts your class is working on
  • A doubles set and a mixed facts set for review
  • A student direction page for math centers
  • Number line and bar graphing worksheets for addition facts from 0-10

Print a few copies, shuffle and let the flipping begin!

What's Included

  • 12 sets of addition War cards covering all addition facts from 1-10
  • A set of doubles only (such as 1 + 1 through 8 + 8)
  • A set of mixed facts
  • A student direction page for use in a center
  • Two sets of worksheets covering addition facts from 0-10 using number lines and bar graphing

Why Teachers Love It

  • A game children already know: The rules follow the traditional game of War, so there is very little to teach before students start playing.
  • Targeted fact practice: Pick one set to focus on a group of facts or use the doubles and mixed sets for review.
  • Lots of practice in a short time: Every flip asks students to solve two facts and compare the sums.
  • Easy to adjust: Print 2-3 copies of a set to change the length and difficulty of the game.
  • Ready for centers: The student direction page lets partners play on their own.
  • Extra practice pages: Number line and bar graphing worksheets pair well with the card game for independent work.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Addition fact fluency: Students build speed and accuracy with addition facts from 1-10.
  • Comparing numbers: Each round asks students to decide which sum is greater.
  • Doubles facts: The doubles set gives focused practice with facts such as 4 + 4 and 7 + 7.
  • Using a number line: Number line worksheets show how to count on to find a sum.
  • Reading a bar graph: Bar graphing worksheets give children another way to show addition facts.
  • Mental math: Children solve facts quickly in their heads to keep up with the game.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Following directions
  • Maintaining attention
  • Using mathematical language
  • Communicating choices
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print 2-3 copies of each addition card set. Print 3 copies of set one because it is a smaller deck. For sets 2-12, two copies should be enough. For use in a center, print the student direction page.

Step 2: Divide the cards evenly between two players, who place their cards face down in a stack. Both players turn over one card at the same time. The player with the highest sum takes both cards and adds them to the bottom of their pile.

Step 3: In case of a tie, each player lays down three cards face down and then turns over the third card. The highest value wins all the cards. Play continues as time allows or until one player runs out of cards.

Easy Differentiation

Children learn their addition facts at different speeds. These ideas help each student get the right level of practice.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with set one, the smaller deck
  • Let students use a number line to check each sum
  • Have students say each fact aloud before comparing
  • Play in teams so partners can talk through each fact

For On-Level Practice

  • Use the set that matches the facts your class is working on now
  • Have students say each comparison aloud, such as "6 + 3 is greater than 4 + 4"
  • Follow the game with a number line worksheet

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the mixed facts set
  • Print three copies of a set for a longer game
  • Ask students to record each comparison with the >, < or = symbol
  • Complete the bar graphing worksheets independently

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice math vocabulary such as add, sum, more and greater
  • Use a sentence frame such as "My sum is ___."
  • Reduce the deck size for shorter games
  • Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play

Perfect For

  • Math centers
  • Partner games
  • Small groups and RTI
  • Early finishers
  • Fact fluency practice
  • Substitute plans
  • Homeschool
