Skills Addressed through Apple Counting Activities
Primary Math Skills
Counting to 20: Students practice numbers 1–20 across mats, ten frames, clip cards, and dice games, giving them repeated opportunities to strengthen counting skills in different formats. By using apple theme manipulatives like pom poms or mini erasers, children build automaticity with counting activities that feel playful instead of repetitive.
Number recognition:Kids connect numerals, number words, and quantities while working through each activity. From tracing numbers on the mats to matching the correct amount on apple trees, students get consistent, hands-on practice with number recognition in engaging ways that help the concept stick.
One-to-one correspondence: Using counters or play dough apples, children demonstrate that each number represents a specific amount. This repeated practice with one-to-one correspondence helps learners move from rote counting to truly understanding quantity, a critical preschool and kindergarten math skill.
Ten frame fluency: By filling in ten frames with apples or other counters, students develop a strong foundation for place value, composing and decomposing numbers, and early addition. Ten frames are an essential tool for building number sense, and these apple theme counting mats give learners meaningful practice all the way to 20.
Fine Motor and Early Learning Skills
Hand strength and coordination: Pinching play dough to form numbers, clipping clothespins onto clip cards, and placing tiny apples in ten frames all target fine motor skills. These motions build hand strength and finger control that are necessary for writing and everyday tasks.
Writing skills: The number mats encourage tracing and independent writing of numbers 1–20. This gives students consistent practice with handwriting and pencil control, while also reinforcing the connection between written numerals and the quantities they represent.
Problem solving and independence: Clip cards and self-checking activities help students take ownership of their learning. By making choices, checking their own answers, and experimenting with manipulatives, children build confidence and independence while practicing counting and number recognition.
How to Use These Apple Theme Counting Activities
Math Centers: Place the apple number mats, clip cards, and counting trees in different math centers. Rotate them weekly so students get a complete, multi-sensory unit on counting to 20 without the activities ever feeling stale.
Small Groups: Use the guided ten frame mats for struggling learners who need extra support, or offer the blank ten frames to advanced learners ready for more challenge. These small group options make it easy to differentiate counting activities for every child.
Whole Class: Incorporate the mats into carpet time or interactive lessons. Roll a die as a group, write the number on the whiteboard, and then have each child show it on their apple counting mat for a quick whole-class game.
Intervention and Special Education: Scaffold with guided ten frames and simple clip cards for beginners, or extend with independent mats and dice games for students who need enrichment. The variety of apple theme number activities ensures that every child can succeed at their own level.
OT or Fine Motor Centers: The clothespin clip cards and play dough number mats are perfect for occupational therapy sessions. Students can strengthen hand muscles while also practicing number recognition and counting in a way that is purposeful and fun.
Sub Plans: Keep a laminated set of apple counting activities in your classroom as a go-to for substitutes. These no-prep math games are engaging for kids and easy for a guest teacher to implement with little explanation.

I love the "Flip" activities. They're always colorful and engaging. These activities reinforce childrens use of language, labeling, identifying of vocabulary associated with specific themes. My students in the past have loved the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall flip, so when I wanted to update my beginning of the school year activities I happened to find the September themed one and knew I had to purchase it. I laminate my mats and have the kids cover the images with colored small or large game chips, vase jewels or playdough. If the images on the mats are too busyi make sure to uave extra copies for the kids to engage in matching the images. The kids love it!
I am greatly appreciative of this content. I have developmentally delayed preschool baby 3-5 year olds and this really is helping them a lot. I wish I had pictures, but I don't yet.
Great game. My students love it and my kids at home. Lots of fun times playing this game. I love the variety in boards. My suggestion for customers is to print it on cardstock so you can't see through the cards.
My kindergarten students are using these clip cards as a review activity in our morning bins. This is a fun review activity that also helps build fine motor skills.
